I'm having the same problem with my 2001 Silverado. Is this switch expensive? and does it have to be installed by a chevy dealership?

Thanks

You have to purchase it at the dealership. Its a dealer item only. Costs aprox. $47 and VERY easy to install. (do it yourself)
Just pull plastic molding away from dash and it exposes the whole switch...you just unplug the old and plug in the new.

before you buy....

do yourself a favor and once the controller is out of the dash pop it open. i did that to mine and found that all of the solders for the pins where the wire harness plug onto were broken. i simply repaired the solders and i was on my way with a working four wheel drive. 5 minutes and no money spent. good luck.

I also had been experiencing frequent "service 4wd" messages although 4wd seemed to function properly. I did not see any obvious problems with connections or solder but reheated the connections anyhow. Switch worked perfect afterward with no "service 4wd" messages. Also followed the advice of others and cleaned gauage cover.

Elapsed time.....about 20 minutes.

Hey Guys
I also have a 2000 Chevy 5.3 extended cab that has the service 4 wheel drive light that comes on about every other time that I drive it. I pulled the plastic cover off under the steering and cannot locate the switch? Am I just blind? Thanks

Re: 2000 4wd SERVICE LIGHT switch; info needed

You guys are great! It was easy to get my switch out. I opened it up, and the solder was cracked around the pins. I've never soldered any electronics, but borrowed a soldering iron from a neighbor, resoldered the connections. The whole job only took 45 minutes from the time I opened the door until it was all back together. The switch has never worked right in the 4 years I've owned this pickup, so this is great! And no money out of pocket, plus it made it easy to clean all the dashboard components! Thanks again!
