Grand Prix 99 Gt 3.8L V6 oil leak
Hello, i recently bought a 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix Gt 4door, has the 3.8L V6, and we noticed it was leaking some oil, when looking at it from the top of the engine using a light you can see oil on top of what i think is an engine mount (passenger side), all of the oil ending up coming down the pan, not sure if it's the gasket. it's leaking to the point where after driving (when it gets hot), theres a couple of circles about 2-3inches in diameter on the ground of oil, so i've been parking it on the road, and checking the oil regularly. Not sure what the common probelms are with these engines regarding oil leaks, if someone could give me some insight on maybe a solution or things to look for, that'd be excellent.
This engine has 380k on it, Yes thats quite abit. Thanks! Last edited by Krule; 07-04-2007 at 10:41 PM. |

Re: Grand Prix 99 Gt 3.8L V6 oil leak
Welcome to AF!!
The oil you see may be coming from several areas. It could be the intake manifold leaking at the end. The only way to fix this would be to remove the lower intake and change the gasket. It could also be coming from area of the PCV valve. Try to isolate the exact location if you can. Leaks from the valve covers are also quite common on these engines especially if you are running synthetic oil. This is a simple fix as is the PCV valve. |

Re: Grand Prix 99 Gt 3.8L V6 oil leak
Looks like it's coming from the top of the middle half of the engine, getting on an engine mount, and eventually coming down the oil pan, so to me it looks like either the oil pan gasket, or the crankshaft seal. Does look like it's from front and back. Any idea on the cost of these repairs? and the work required to fix these? whats the options that can be going wrong in the top middle half of the engine to be dripping oil?
The oil im using is 10W30. Thanks for your reply Gtp Dad. |

Re: Grand Prix 99 Gt 3.8L V6 oil leak
This is an expensive repair on these engines since you basically have to jack up or almost pull the engine to get to the oil pan gasket. You might want to try a high mileage oil that will condition the seals and possibly slow down the leak.
