Diagnostis of ODB2 code P0446

My check engine light came on today on my 2001 V6 Camry and produced a code of P0446 (Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction)
Can anyone advise as how to further diagnose this issue and what repairs may be necessary?
Thanks
Fred

first check the gas cap, thight it up, did it click right away? or it was loose, if it was loose, you found the probl. if not, check the canister and hoses. one common issue on your car, is the vsv. check it out

Re: Diagnostis of ODB2 code P0446

P0446 is the code for the VSV on the charcoal canister. The VSV needs to be replaced. The VSV is located under the car by the gas tank. There is a screw holding the vsv in and 2 hoses one going in and one out. The reason I know all this is cause I had the same problem, and replaced the vsv and the problem went away. The code for a loose or faulty gas cap is P0440.

Re: Diagnostis of ODB2 code P0446

My camry threw the P0401 a couple of years back. I cleaned out the EGR from top to bottom, etc... changed the solenoid, and still kept throwing the P0401. Ultimately, I had the dealer change out the EGR/VSV. It was nearly impossible for me to get to it (I don't have a good jack...other than the one for changing tires).

Anyway, a few months ago, my 2000 started throwing this P0446. Solidg, how tough is the check/change out on the canister VSV? Are there any pics available for where/what this looks like. Is it easy to get to? I do have some ramps that I guess I could back onto for access to the tank area.

Download your model years factory manual from the "Factory Service Manual" thread at the top of the forum.

Re: Diagnostis of ODB2 code P0446

The vsv by the charcoal canister is held onto a bracket with a phillips head screw. My mechanic had to cut off the head of the screw, cause the screw was so corroded. I tried first to remove the screw with a stubby phillips head screw driver, but was unable to, I barely had enough clearance. There is one hose that goes into the vsv and one that goes out, neither are clamped.
So if you have something that can cut the screw head, the job should be easy. Otherwise you might have a tough time.

I dont have any pics. The vsv is available from the dealer for $50 if you want to see what one looks like.
