Drive belt broke why???

Yesterday my car was making a lound noise like soon after the drive belt broke 1992 Mercury Grand Marquis. Anyway the belt did not look to bad to me. Now I CAN NOT GET THE BELT ON. And now one of the power steering hoses is leaking. How do i get it on i LOOK AT THE DIAGRAM STILL NO LUCK. Is there any way i can tell if the belt broke from a pully looking up or is it is the alternater, a/c etc. Most of all having problem getting it on the correct way any help or advise.

Parts store may given you the wrong belt if you have anything left of the old one take it to the parts store with you.
