Regular gasonline Toyota Camry gets 38 mpg!
Hello all. I just bought a 2002, 4-door Toyota Camry from my Mom about a month ago. When she owned it, she averaged about 29 mpg. Now that I've got it, I've been geting about 36 to 38! She would only keep about 28 psi in the tires, but I air my up to about 42 psi (It says the max is 44 on the tire). I also don't run the A/C much (unless I'm out on the road, then I turn it on just long enough to get things bearable), plus I drive like an old man (about 55mph).
I've talked to other people, and they san they only get about 29 to 31 mpg in their Camry's. I knew my slower driving and inflated tires would help gas mileage some, but I never knew it would make THIS much of a difference... |

Re: Regular gasonline Toyota Camry gets 38 mpg!
I would attribute most of that to your "old man" driving. I would think the tire pressure contributes a tad but not that much. Prove me wrong. Keep driving "like an old man" but lower the TP back to where you're mom had it and see how much difference it makes.
Keep in mind, the more air in the tire, the less of the surface area of the tire touches the road. If you drive on wet roads, you may take a spin you weren't planning on.

Re: Regular gasonline Toyota Camry gets 38 mpg!
yea, i bet its the driving. dropping your psi back down will only cost you 1-2 mpg. ive had times i've gotten 32-34ish just by slowing down to 65 (from 80). but hey, if you're patient enough to take your time gettin places and save bucks cuz of it, good for you. I wish i could be that patient.
I would, however, take RIPs advice and see if you can replicate without so much pressure. Not only is it unsafe if it gets any sort of wet, but you also increase chances of blowouts (especially with the heat of summer), and also cause uneven wear on the tires, which might end up costing you money in the end if you have to replace sooner. |

2004 Camry LE.
Stock. On a trip of 454 highway miles (travel often to see my children) with 4-5 bathroom stops: 33 mpg. I do not remember the numbers but I keep recomended tire pressure. I think it is 29 psi. Sam P.S. I forgot to mention that I do not go over 80 mile per hour.

Re: Regular gasonline Toyota Camry gets 38 mpg!
I drive about 55 because it's the speed limit. It's about 12 miles before I get to town, but there's another town on the highway where the speed limit drops to 45 in between it, so the speed limit never reaches 65. That's why I drive slow.
I also accelerate easy, and brake early so it can coast. (Higher air pressure helps it coast longer without slowing down, I think; nothing like coasting at 40 mph with the RPMs down to 1000)

Did you calculate this over several tankfulls? If on 1 or 2 fillups, 38 may not be valid.

I can still get 37 out of my 95 Camry with 219K on the odometer. If you do drive right it is possible.

Who you calling an old man!!! I drive that way all the time also with good results. I keep my tires inflated to 32lbs and use synthetic oil in my 4 banger. Here in California I see most if not all cars will get decent mileage wether it's a car, truck or SUV. The problem is people have a tendency to whine and holler about gas prices BUT are unwilling to change their driving habits nor will they take steps to try and save gas. All they need to do is plan ahead and slow down. I personally believe we need to go back to the national 55 MPH law. Not that it'll do some good but it's a start.I see this every morning driving through Los Angeles, Beverly Hills on the streets!!! Everyone rushes to work driving like a banchee or the worlds coming to an end. Heck their so rich they can't get/have an concept of how to save a few bucks. That's what I see, rimfire,22 |

Rimfire is right on the money.
I'm tired of people who complain about gas prices and then drive like the stuff is still 40 cents/gal. I also exclusively buy Hess fuel because they don't buy Saudi or Venezuelan, so I've avoided putting about $6K in retail sales into enemy coffers since 12 SPT, 2001. |

Same here in Boston. Plus drivers are so impatient at getting to a red light that they'll race up to one, expecting it to turn green at their presence.

I'm glad so many people see that same thing in other states so it's not an isolated incident.
Again it doesn't take much to save a few bucks and keep it in your wallet. I'll bet if they make a good decent attempt they might be surprised as to how much their cars can achieve. rimfire,22
