96 Cooling Fan

My Service Engine Soon light came on so I took the car to the local repair shop to have the codes read. I was told that the Driver's side fan is not coming on and that is what is making the SES light come on. Would this be a fan problem? Or could this be a computer problem? Or relay problem? How would I tell? Thanks.

Re: 96 Cooling Fan

You might try replacing the relay for that fan. The relays are under a fuse-box like lid in the front left side of the engine compartment (if you are facing the vehicle from outside).

There is one for each fan--you might even switch them before you go buy a new one and then see if it makes the one on the drivers' side work and the other not work.

Both of my fans are not working now, and I'm going to go buy one of those relays and see if that is the problem for me as well.

Good luck.

Re: 96 Cooling Fan

If I understand the operation of the fans correctly, they both should come on when the AC is turned on??? Neither fan comes on. I ran the car to warm it up and still neither fan came on. I pulled both fans out and hooked them up directly to the battery and they both worked. I also followed the instructions from one post that I read to remove the connector from the #1 relay on the firewall and jump the large red and black wires together. When I did this, both fans came on low. Does this mean that it is the #1 relay that is bad? Or should I be doing further tests?

Thanks.

Re: 96 Cooling Fan

I was in the same exact boat. Neither of my fans came on with the a/c nor when the car heated way the heck up.

I did end up buying one of those relays, and I replaced the passenger side relay with it and now my passenger side fan works. I need to purchase another relay for the driver's side fan.

I think the relay was eight bucks.

Good luck.

Re: 96 Cooling Fan

I replaced the #1 relay and the fans still do not come on. I also tried switching the #2 relay and the #3 relay and still nothing. Is it possible that both #2 and #3 relay went at the same time? I will try buying one of these relays and see if that helps, but any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: 96 Cooling Fan

I installed a new relay in the passenger side location and still no fans. I broke down and purchased a OBD11 scanner ($455.00 Ca) and I got the code P1660 Cooling Fan Control Circuits. I don't know where to go from here. Help! Please! Thanks.
