How do I remove the crank pulley/balancer? (1992)

I've been looking for hours to see how to remove the crank pully/balancer from my 1992 PA. We got a puller from Autozone, but it's apparantly the wrong kind. What do I neeed and how to I use it?

Problem is as usual AZ is not the place for " real" mechanics tools and parts. Try the ones available at Napa, designed for this unit.

We don't have a Napa here anymore, Autozone and Oreilly's ran them out of business. But I think the puller they gave me will work, I just have to find some bolts that'll fit into the balancer. I'll try it out when I can get back out to my buddy's shop this afternoon.

The puller you need will look like the one in the pic. If you can't find one locally, you can order from Harbor Freight Tools or Click Here

This puller won't work as the pulley does not have the holes for the bolts. I have a 92 skylark and I replaced my bottom pulley. I used a 6inch 2/3 jaw puller. If you raise the car and remove the splash shield it usually gives you enough room.

That pulley does work fine, there are holes inside the pulley. You have to use 1/4" bolts to attach to them, though. We've manage to get it on and off 12 times last night trying to allign the damn sensor. After the last time the pulley was too warped to used so I just picked up a new one and we're going to go at it again today.

And yeah, it's about 5' in the air and the splash guard off.

Welcome to AF!
We are in the PA Forum! What applies to a Skylark, will not be the same on the PA. Please refrain from posting Skylark info in the PA forum.

The pulley in the photo is the exact same pulley on my skylark. I know there are tiny holes, but when I tried fighting the harmonic balancer puller with those holes, I found it much easier to use a 3 jaw puller. I was only trying to offer info to help because of my past experience with the same situation.

Re: How do I remove the crank pulley/balancer? (1992)

Well, it doesn't matter. Both ways work fine. Although it would seem there's a risk of warping the pulley using a jaw puller. But that's neither here nor there. I bought a new pulley this morning. We slid it right up there, tightened it down and put the belt back on it. We're good to go now. No more stalling (so far) and no more "no-start" problems (so far).

However, after a new fuel pump, CPS, and crank pully/harmonic balancer the car is running as top notch as a car with 220k miles can. I hope it stays that way.

Thanks for your input, however, the purpose of my post, was to warn anyone, if they are only replacing the crank sensor and use a three-jaw puller on a "good harmonic balancer", damage may take place at the rubber insulator ring between the outer and inner rings, and instant failure may occur. A three-jaw puller is not recommended for pulling the balancer on these cars

Re: How do I remove the crank pulley/balancer? (1992)

I have a 95 Buick LeSabre, I am trying to remove the puley. I have the right puller but none of the crews that come with it fit. I tryed a 1/4 standard screw like the ones you find at Home Depot. The diameter is right but the tread pitch isn't. Anyone knows what it is?

You should be able to find 1/4X28 thread bolts at any hardware store. They may refer to them as "fine thread". BTW, they should be 3 1/4 in long.
Good Luck!
