96 Taurus Tranny or PCM?

I've got a 96 Taurus wagon, 3L Vulcan, and AX4N Tranny. The AX4N was rebuilt approx 1 yr ago.
My problem is that after approximately an hour of driving, the torque converter fails to lock up. It is shifting through all of the gears, tach indicates no lock up. In addition, it will after the same hour of driving, intermittently lock in first gear when pulling away from a stop. The strangest thing is there re no DTC codes. Seems to me the tranny is doing what the PCM is telling it to, is my PCM pooched?
(VSS replaced 1 week ago, no change in symptoms)
Thanks in advance,
Regards,
Sparx

Welcome to the forum!

Have you checked the condition of the transmission fluid recently? Does it look or smell burnt?

Beyond changing the fluid and filter, you're probably at a point of needing a scan tool that can access the transmission data stream and monitor transmission fluid temperature, shaft speed sensors, torque converter clutch request, and solenoid states during a drive.

Re: 96 Taurus Tranny or PCM?

Are the "memory/freezeframe" codes being checked?
