Nova rear end conversion

I want to change the rear end in my 77 Nova with a rear end that has disk brakes and is strong. I was told the 79-81 firbird / trans am rear end would bolt right in and they came with disk brakes so that would be a fairly cheap solution. just want to make sure that the info I was told was correct. any other ideas or vehicles that are interchangeable?

Try this site, Team Novas. They have a forum, classifieds, etc. You should find an answer there.

"Yes, but it takes a little bit of work. 70-81 Z-28 and Trans am rears are about 1" wider than the Nova's rear. 82-up are no good!!! I put an 80 Z-28 posi rear with 3:42's in mine. The rear tires get moved out about 1/2" on each side, but you'd never know it from looking (see the pic of my car below). I run 225 60 R 15's with no problem. I have run 245 60 R 15's with no rubbing but they are just a little too close to the wheel lips for comfort. This is what I did for my swap: cut the spring perches off the new rear, center the new rear in the Nova and make sure the pinion angle is at the same angle as the original Nova rear, mark the location of where the new perches have to be welded, make sure to double and triple check your measurements, get a set of Nova perches and weld them on (I recommend getting a professional welder to do this because those axle tubes are pretty thick" - NOVA71

check these sites out for interchangeability info:

Re: Nova rear end conversion

It might be easier to do a aftermarket rear disc swap. Check ebay for kits.

Re: Nova rear end conversion

I agree with molhannah, rear conversions are fairly cheap. might be cheaper in the long run to just spend the 400 rather than try to adapt parts. I was looking to do the same swap, but I have found that junk yard usually want way too much for a decent complete rear end anyway.

good luck - zach
