I have (2) problems:
1). My temp gage needle fluctuates between normal and max. hot positions along with the gages red light coming on, both randomly. Coolant level is o.k. and the engine doesn't seem to be overheating. 2). However, the engine has started to misfire consistantly. Is the coolant sensor no good and does it somehow send a faulty signal to the computer causing the engine to misfire? Or are these problems unrelated? |

Re: Temperature Gage gone crazy-3.8L
Follow-up:
I removed the "appearance cover" from the engine and found (2) bare wires (1) grn and (1) yellow going into a connector that had (1) blk, (1) grn and (1) yellow wire. They were located straight back behind the oil filler tube in front of the fuel rail. I insulated each wire with tape, started the engine and all the problems were gone. My question now is: Are there connectors available with wires that I can splice into what remains of the grn and yellow wires? |

Re: Temperature Gage gone crazy-3.8L
So did that fix your crazy coolant readings problem AND your misfiring? Or just the misfiring? Or just the coolant readings?
If I understand your post correctly, the wires are still disconnected from where they are intended to go, and you have them taped up so as not to short out. Youre wanting a new connector to fix things up? Im not entirely sure what youre wanting, the connectors themselves may be troublesome to find, and may be a dealer only thing $$$$. you can probably fix up what youve got. But im curious to see what wiring is unattached, I dont have a 3.8, and its been a while since Ive messed with one. Got pics?

Re: Temperature Gage gone crazy-3.8L
Misfiring & temp gage reading problems were gone as a result of taping (insulating) the wires. These wires ran next to each other andwere always connected to the connector. I only insulated them from each other. I was hoping there would be replacement connectors(with wire leads) available that I could splice into the harness and replace the tape fix that I did.

Re: Temperature Gage gone crazy-3.8L
Based on your description it sounds like the connector and wiring to the EGR valve. The GM electrical connectors do not come with wire leads, connector only. The EGR wiring is part of the main engine compartment wiring harness bundle. One option is to use heat shrink insulation instead of replacing the connector and damaged wiring.
