Brake Job for 2002 Suburban..

Getting ready to do the first brake job on my wife's 2002 Suburban (if needed) and need to know if there is anything special I need to know about before I get started. The vehicle has a little over 41K miles and pads have never been replaced before, but she is getting ready to go on a pretty long road trip and I want to make sure the brakes are in the best shape possible before she leaves. Also, how long does the air filter last in these vehicles? By looking at the indicator it doesn't appear as though it needs changing but 41K seems like a long time for one filter to last.
