247J trasfer case
My mechanic told me I need my transfer case replaced or rebuilt. I noticed a couple of months ago noise that sounded like a playing card in a bicycle spoke. As I accelerated the sound got faster and as I slowed down so did it and eventually stops when I do. The noise has been getting a little louder.
Any thoughs and does anyone know what to expect as far as labor. It seem like its going to be pretty expensive. Any advice guys and if anyone has a hook up on one at a good price lat me know... Thanks

Re: 247J trasfer case
you can replace it yourself, just make aligment marks on both shafts, undo crossmembers and unbolt case while supporting tranny with jack stand . use a jack to lower case and just bolt back in, as someone told me you dont have to replace with the same one you can put a 242 or 249. but labor from the dealer is 2.5hrs to replace, bout 300bucks.

Re: 247J trasfer case
M ymechanic friend said he would replace it for 150 labor so thats not so bad. What is so bad is the price of one of these. I cant really find that many 247 transfer cases and when I do its new and like 850.
I see more adds for the 247 vicious coupler or coupling. Is there something that mabe my mechanic overlooked be cause I took it to the dealership a Jeep dealership and they said they heard nothing and saw nothing wrong. Now my mechanic says he put it up on his lift and put it in gear and clearly heard the rattling noise coming from the transfer case. Is the smart thing to just get a new one or have him rebuild the one. The new one would cost 950-1000 and I know the rebuild kit is around 170-190 but he is going to give me a price on the rebuild and how much down time. Any thoughts, ideas, or what-ifs?

Re: 247J trasfer case
That sounds like quite a toss up. I'd ask how much your mechanic friend would charge for labor and the downtime. If it seems worth it to you to have it fixed and it's less than a new transfer case, then it would be up to you to do it and just drive the GP around while the Jeep is under the knife.

Re: 247J trasfer case
Well, my mechanic friend found me a used transfer case for my Jeep. It has 58,000 miles on it and its going to cost 300 dollars plus 150 to drop the old one and put the new old one in. I am going to keep and rebuild my original one. All this will still be under the cost of a brand new one.
I will cross my fingers and hope this 300 dollar one is alot better off than mine. I have been told by a couple ppl now that launching hard is most likely the culprit. Hey, what can I say. There is nothing like a 2500rpm brake/gas launch with an AWD but I think I will take it easy for a while it is very costly to have fun.

Re: 247J trasfer case
I would check the cv joint on the frt drive shaft,on the tcase end.I have seen these make a noise similar to what you are describing. And you said a jeep dealer could not find anything wrong?

Re: 247J trasfer case
They sent me home with the assurance that they heard nothing. Bullshit. I dont think they even looked at it.
