Question Changing Rotors on Accord

I am in need of some rotors on my accord because the one's I got are warped and make the car shake. I have changed rotors before on my chevy and all I had to do was bang them loose with a hammer since they were rusted on. Is this the case do I need any special tools to get the rotors off? I really do not want to start taking things apart and run into problems not knowing what to do. Any help would be appreciated, thanx!

(By the way I have an automatic 2003 3.0L V6 Accord EX)

Re: Changing Rotors on Accord

I don't have specifics for newer ones, but I'm guessing it's similar...it kinda sucks.

Find out why they warped, though. Otherwise you'll just be doing it again soon...

1990-95 Accord
See Figures 4 and 5
  1. If equipped with an air bag, disconnect the negative battery cable and properly disable the Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), as detailed in Chassis Electrical .
  2. Loosen the lug nuts, then Raise and safely support the vehicle on jackstands.
  3. Remove the wheels.
  4. Remove the steering knuckle from the vehicle. Please refer to Suspension & Steering for procedures.
  5. Remove the 4 bolts retaining the hub unit to the steering knuckle and remove the hub unit.

Fig. 4: Remove the 4 bolts retaining the hub unit to the steering knuckle and remove the hub unit/rotor assembly

  1. Remove the 4 bolts, then separate the hub unit from the brake rotor.

Fig. 5: Remove the 4 bolts, then separate the hub unit from the brake rotor

To install:
  1. Assemble the disc to the hub unit and tighten the bolts to 40 ft. lbs. (55 Nm).
  2. When installing the hub to the knuckle, use new self-locking bolts and tighten them to 33 ft. lbs. (45 Nm).
  3. Install the steering knuckle.
  4. Lower the vehicle and check for proper brake operation.
  5. If equipped, enable the SRS system and connect the negative battery cable.

Re: Changing Rotors on Accord

That seems like a pain in the ass, but thanks for the info. Wish they were easily changed like on my cavalier.

Re: Changing Rotors on Accord

im crackin up because ive been having the exact same probs with my 2000 abs accord so let me share what ive learned....

honda got everything right except OEM brake system. the 93-97 accord have pressed on rotors that can be removed (with a hammer) and w/o a machine. but when you shave or turn the rotors and try to put them back on they will never go back on quite right. an attempt to make a dealer visit neccecairy. for the 98-03 accords remove the calipers, the caliper brace, and unscrew 2 philip head screws located to either side of the central bolt and it shold fall off right in ya hand. so please, watch ya hands lol. slap on some good rotors and wipe the new ones w/ alcahol to remove any grease residue from manufactoring and slap on some good pads...pump ya brakes and youll be back to bending corners in no time. the whole process took me about 15 to 20 min both sides.

That's cool if they went back to conventional style mounting...the ones that had the hub plate on them sucked...the only thing I can add to what you said is before mounting up the new ones, clean the flange with a wire cup brush or wire wheel on a drill to clean any rust scale off...any debris between the rotor and the mounting flange can make the rotor run untrue (and the wheel as well) and cause pulsation and wobble in the steering. Pay close attention to the area around the wheel studs and center boss, that's where they get heavy scale.

Sometimes you need to spray some WD-40 and smack those set screws with a hammer or a hand impact before they'll come loose...they are fine threaded and and get cheezed up pretty good sometimes once a car's a few years old...especially if you live up north.
