96 GC Laredo stalling while driving and stop lights

I have a 96 GC that keeps stalling after driving a couple of miles down the road or when I slow to a light. If I am at the light It will idle and then cut off. Even when I am driving it will seem to loose power and then stall. For awhile it would restart and I would continue to go, But last night it seemed to finally give up and had to get a tow. Went out this morning and seems to run fine. I did not drive it anywhere yet because I don't need another tow bill?? I had just replaced the spark plugs, wires, and new cap & rotor about two weeks ago and last night the fuel filter because I had 3 people tell me it was the filter. I also had suggestions that it could be the coil pack went bad? or even the fuel pump.. Any idea's what it could be??

Re: 96 GC Laredo stalling while driving and stop lights

Any possibilties that it is the transmission? I just bought a 96 GC that is doing the same exact thing, except less severe. The guy I bought it from said to just get a Transmission flush every 5 or 6 months and it would stop, for 5 or 6 months.

could be Crank Position Sensor, Cam Position Sensor, Throttle Position Sensor, IAT Sensor. i would go buy a manual and multi meter ad check the sensors. How does it sie? Does it just shut right off or does it act like it dies of slow painful death?

Re: 96 GC Laredo stalling while driving and stop lights

I have been having this same problem with my 98 jeep. My beast starts right up in the morning and seems ready to go but once I drive out of the drive way and come to the first stop about a mile down the road, the rpms drop, almost out of the blue, i get a good shake from the engine from this and some times it will rev back up to idle or most often it will stall out. One other thing that I havent seen mentioned in any of the forums about this problem is that when this happens at a stop light, if i feel the rpms start dropping i can shift into neutral and the engine will sit there and idle fine. Shift back into drive and take off on green, almost drag racing stay hehe. Doing this i have not had the jeep stale out, so a temporary workaround for anyone to try if they have this stall problem.

Keeping the jeep running while in neutral has me kinda perplexed as to the source of the problem. Any other suggestions to check/fix this problem?

Can anyone else confirm if the neutral trick works for them?
