Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

I have a 91 toyota camry and my whole front end of my car is shaking While it is in park and neutral. The headlamps,Hood, bumper, radiator, and the engine shake. I have replaced all three old motor mounts with completly new ones. The rotor cap, wires, and spark plugs have been replaced with new ones. Fuel filter has been checked and works fine. When starting from cold start there is no vibration for 5 seconds or so then it slowly increases and like I said before the whole front end of the car starts to vibrate insanely. It is very notcible inside the car as well. What is causing this vibration?

My camry has the 3S-FE 4 cyl engine with Automatic Transmission and does not have a PCV vaulve. Currently the car has a semi new timing belt that went through some abuse when the water pump failed but was in good condition and still worked after replacing the water pump.

Also when I remove the bolt near the distributer cap so I can adjust the timing as it says in my book but the distributer cap will not twist, I have tried tapping onto the metal to get it to budge but it doesnt. Is this how I'm suppose to adjust the timing on my 91 toyota camry or is that computer controlled?

All fluids are also new and have been checked. I never used to have these vibrations on my car and it just started to happen recently.

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

Welcome to the forum. Not quite clear. Did this start after your water pump / timing belt issue? If so I would suspect the timing is out to lunch and needs to be either adjusted at the distributor or the timing marks need to be realigned.

You say you removed THE BOLT that holds the distributor in place to adjust the timing. If you misspoke, I appologise for this but, there are TWO BOLTS that secure the distributor. Both need to be loosened to be able to turn it.

Have you checked timing using a timing light? Should be 10 deg BTDC with terminals T and E1 shunted at the test connector. It may not be timing related. Are you getting a check engine light?

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

I just replaced the last two motor mounts on my car. The vibration problems still continue but are now somewhat erratic. At idle in Park it sometimes vibrates and sometimes does not. When the engine is reved up to high RPMs it does not vibrate.

The check engine light is not showing

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

Try cleaning the idle air control valve and/or throttle body. Just as the name implies, the idle air control valve controls idle speed. If the shaft is binding or the port in the throttle body is clogged, it can decrease idle rpm and make the engine shake. You'll need to look at the EGR valve/modulator/vsv/and tubing too. They can create the same symtoms. Another thing to check would be fuel injectors. How about a vacuum leak? Anything that can throw off the combustion process in one or all cylinders.

When you or the mechanic changed the spark plugs, was one black and sooty or very wet? Plug condition can tell you the whole story.

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

Thanks for the advice RIP, per your suggestion I did the following:

I took apart the EGR system and cleaned the Throttle body and the EGR valve. One line to the EGR valve was plugged and overall the whole valve was full of black carbon. The car ran very good for 10 minutes and then the vibration started again but was not as bad as before. Now I'm thinking that the problem might be the injectors because I sprayed alot of throttle body/intake cleaner in the intake while cleaning a port to the EGR valve. There was still alot of carbon inside the intake so it might have clogged the injectors again if that is indeed the problem.

P.S. before i did the following I had checked the spark plugs and they look normal. Meaning there was no indication of a problem by the condition of the spark plugs

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

*Update*

Cleaned Intake Manifold and Fuel Injectors.

*Does not vibrate on acceleration
*Does not vibrate when going up hill
*Vibrates on cruise
*Vibrates on idle
*Vibrates in Park and Drive
*Front mount is a year old but was thrashed around when moving engine back and forth
------------
*Vacumn Lines are clear and not leaking...
*EGR is clean and working
*Fuel Filter is clear
*Throttle Body is clean and all lines are clear of obstruction
*15 minutes after warm up engine compartment runs smoother but in the car loud shaking noises are audiable

Perhaps I put in a mount wrong? Is that possible???

Re: Help! Engine and front frame Vibration problems

What is the sequence in which the mounts need to be bolted down?
