If everything is hooked up as it should be, there shouldn't be any empty vacuum ports. If there are, it will be a source of a vacuum leak and as you implied a source for crap to get sucked in.

yeah it most likely would be, being as how they removed a few emissions vacumm lines including that infamous one that went to the canister

Now about that... If I remember correctly that line was shared with the PCV valve. Is that still hooked up in your car?

yeah there is, its in the valve cover and then theres a black line from it that goes into the front bottom of the carb.

Could be a piece of the float bowl insert - I've seen one that wasn't all in one piece once when I took an old 4MV apart a while back.

well i got it back now, seems to be running fine. i forgot to ask what the peice looked like though, i would have liked to know too. now that i know where im at with the car i know what needs to be done now, some prevenative maintainence with the tranny (inspection, fluid & screen change) and i now know i need a new AC compressor btw it looks as if all the vacumm holes on the carb are capped already from the emissions setup that was removed.
