back to get more good advice from AMF
Ok when my jeep is shifting gears going up a hill it jolts into first real hard then back to second within 1 sec. it seems it shits to many times like it is confused. second thing the trans. does, is shift from third to second countless times going 30 mph not changing speed and everytime it shifts the jolt is so hard it feels like the bottom of the jeep it going to blow off. I have had the speed sensor fixed but that only helped my overdrive shift. My low speed shift is still all messed up. Oh the jeep has 122,000 miles if that helps if anyone can help please respond 1994 Jeep Grand Ltd. |

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
Hi eraseraj
You likely know this one and have done it allready but just to be sure - check the fluid level - hot if possible. after that, the next items to check are the throttle cable adjustment and the band adjustments. How long ago was the last transmission fluid change??? ![]() JD

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
the person who owned the jeep before changed the fluid once at 50,000 miles but that was about all. I am going to try changing it and see what happens but if the trans. still shifts bad does that mean i may have to get it rebuilt

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
When you pull the transmission dipstick, What does the oil smell like??
If it smells burnt, hopefully you can catch it in time While it is possible that a tranny rebuild is in your future have the
use ATF+4 if it is a chrysler transmission
the chrysler transmissions have one band inside the pan and one outside
Some times the Governor assembly gets stickey and hangs up. If the person doing the service is knowledgeable they will know what to do. There are other things that will screw up the shift but start with the easiest stuff first. JD

well i Finally got the trans. acid flushed. and all new fluid put in it. my rough shift has stopped, and random shifting is gone, however when going around corners, and slowing down wile making the turn it will down shift to first gear and it will not stay in for more then an 1/2 a second then it will go back into second but it does it more then once on the same turn. It will do it 3 times (1st to 2nd to 1st to 2nd then continue like normal) is this bad for it? does it need to be reajusted? Could it need rebuilt? is there away to make it last another 20,000 miles if it does need rebuilt? I have money issues becasue i am in highschool and saving for college.
If anyone can help please respond. thankyou

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
I am no car expert but they said they had to adjust something, so I am guessing it was the bands. Now the type of trans. fluid, I do know it was not ATF+4 it was ATF+3 and when I said to the guy are you sure it's +3 he said it was the right kind and he knew what he was doing. Is This person full of crap?

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
most shops use mercron(sp) with the Chrysler friction modifier additive. very few shops actually use atf+3 and rarely will you find atf+4 in a shops tanks. here in town we have one of 22 shops in the country that has the atf+4 and the atf+5 full synthetic in his tanks.

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
I had the transmission rebuilt at around 160,000 miles (1994 Jeep GC). The tranny shop said they prefer to rebuild them themselves rather than buying a new one (I don't think you really get a NEW one - just one that someone else rebuilt). He said he prefers to do the rebuild himself so he knows what goes into it. My understanding is that the rebuilt transmission is as good as new (although there are other parts around it that are still old). That should last for another 100,000 miles or more (hopefully much more if you continue to change the fluid periodically).
I've generally heard that FLUSHING an old transmission is a BAD idea - something about dislodging particles or causing problems that you didn't have before. It's best to drop the pan, change the filter, and refill the fluid. You might have a new or rebuilt transmission in your future. Plan on around $2000, which could include a new radiator if there are restrictions in the transmission cooling system. It's tough to put off a major repair that might leave you stranded somewhere. I drove mine until the gears were shifting so badly that I realized it was about to die. The tranny place agreed, and I've been happy ever since it was rebuilt (except for some leaks a few weeks later, which they fixed under warranty without any dispute). |

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
eraserj, since you've got new fluid in and some of the shifting is still funky, you may want to have a look at the CPS (crankshaft position sensor) my 2000 4.0 shifted back and forth like that at times before I replaced the CPS.
danielle41852000, Welcome to AF! I'm sure you'll find some good information here. A brand new transmission, with proper care and fluid changes, should last well beyond 200000 miles. If you get a used one, you also get the maintenance, or lack thereof, from the previous owner, so how long it lasts is a question to be answered down the road. You may also want to consider rebuilding your current transmission. This will cost more than a used one, but less than a new one, and in many cases (if done by a reputable shop) it will give you the same longevity as a new trans.

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
dont worry about the transmission. ATF+3 is just fine for Cryslers, synthetic is good, but your car has 120,000 miles on it-if any damage has been done, it is done already. A power flush is good.

Re: 1994 jeep Trans.
X2 on the ATF +3 that stuff will be fine for a 94 tranny.
You need to hunt down a reputable shop that won't just quote you a rebuild. There are some electronic valve controls accessable if you take off the underside pan that aren't a real pita to change out and usually the cause of the funky shift.
