Does Not Start

My car will not start. It kicks over completely but turns off right away. I changed the fuel filter and the spark plug wires. It still didn't want to start. Had someone come over and he thought it might be the fuel pump. I bought the fuel pump and tried to replace it. The fuel pump is only part of the whole section you take out of the car. I haven't been able to find any diagrams on how to go about changing the part. The new parts don't seem to fit the old assembly in the same way. After finally placing the new part and attaching it to the car again. I am found with the same exact problem I began with and an extra fuel pump. Please give me some help!!!!

Re: Does Not Start

In order to start, you need fuel, compression, and spark.

Start with the basics.............

Check for spark
Check fuel pressure
Check compression
Check timing

Re: Does Not Start

I would lean more towards timing. Whats the mileage? Have you ever had the timing belt changed? Whats your fuel pressure reading? Low compression readings accross all cyl could indicate a belt that jumped a tooth or two.

Make sure your inertia switch isn't tripped.

Re: Does Not Start

Hey I had the same problem.
First off do replace the timing belt, it really isn't all that difficult. 1.9 litre I had to remove tire & right eng . mount, but all in all not too hard. Then if still not working do what I finally did, after it stared - ran 10 seconds- died and wouldn't re-start:
Remove the control module and its mount seperate them, scrape the contact areas,(where the module mounts to the metal plate and where the plate mounts to the car.) and put in with new bolts or just add star washers. The bad ground was not letting full signal through, now.... no problems w/ starting.
Let me know how it turns out.... good luck.

Re: Does Not Start

Look into the engine through the oil filler cap while someone is turning the engine over and look to see if the valve train is moving. If it isn't you have a broken timing belt. If it is not broken I would agree with carlos80 that it has jumped time a few notches. Can't argue with Johnny Mullett either. Check for spark, fuel pressure, compression and timing. This is the place to start.
