1999 GC Water on Passenger Floor

I've read all over the internet on the "soaked floorboard" for the GC's and how it's been a problem for many people. The problem is virtually every problem is for the 1998 and earlier models. The evaporator housing is different on the 1999 and later models. I've got basically the same problem that everyone is having. I've got links to pictures where you can see that the water is leaking from the foam insulate right against the firewall. You can see that I've tried drilling a hole and poking around with a hanger, and using compressed air. I've seen some water drip back out of that hole. I've plugged that hole and water still comes from the foam insulate. You can see in the 2nd picture that water is dripping from it and the foam is soaked on the bottom. I'm not even completely sure if I drilled the hole in the right area. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure it's water and not coolant?

Re: 1999 GC Water on Passenger Floor

i found this video on YouTube about clogged drains for the Air Condition and how to stop them from leaking on a 1998 Grand Cherokee I don't know if it is the same for your 99 but you can try it.

Good Luck

Re: 1999 GC Water on Passenger Floor

Here is another possibility:

If you have rodded out the drain hole and the floor is still getting wet, then the problem is most likely the seal between the evaporator case and the firewall.

To fix this:

1. Pull the carpet back

2. Cut the black mat and get it out of your way

3. Use a tool of your choice to remove the old material.

4. After all of the material is removed, dry the area completely.

5. Stuff some A/C Insulation tape (available at parts stores) around the whole drain tube. It will be tough because without removing the evap case, there is little room to do so.

When the seal starts to deteriorate, the water travels back on the outside of the tube and gets inside.

Re: 1999 GC Water on Passenger Floor

i too have looked into this and ive figured out that when the ac system leaks it leaks between the unibody/subframe and floorboard, and eventually collects up enough water to get the floorboards wet, everyone i know who has found a solution to this has drilled a hole in the underbody near or in the wheel well.

and ive had about 4 people who have 98 and lower zj's and they all say this works, though i have yet to take the time to do it.
