burning Oil smell
I have read the oil cooler O-rings have a tendency to leak after a while. and I am wondering if that can cause an oil-burning smell from the engine. I smell burned oil sometimes after driving for at least 20 minutes, but it doesnt smoke out the exhaust and i dont see any leaks on the top of the engine. Also, i can smell burned oil from the hvac vents sometimes. My P71 is a 99 with 103,000 on it, and ive had new plugs put in and my mechanic didnt mention any leaks. If it is the oil cooler o-rings, how much dos it cost to replace them?, or since this is a personal car now is it necassary to retain the oil cooler at all? I am all for keeping it original but if its gonna be another $600 job, my wife wont like it

Re: burning Oil smell
I'm not too famaliar with the 99 p71, but I have had that oil cooler problem with my 2003. My oil cooler is attached to the lower rad hose, and it has 4 o-rings. The inlet has 2 o-rings, and the outlet has 2 o-rings. Took me 5 minutes to replace the o-rings and cost me about 20 bucks canadian from the dealer for the 4 o-rings. All you need is an 8mm...or is that a 10mm wrench to remove the coupler to the cooler line to the lower rad hose unit. Have something to catch the oil that will come out after you pull the bolt and seperate the cooler line. Remove the old o-rings, and slip on the new o-rings. I dabb a little grease around the o-rings to help them seal. Put the coupler back onto the lower rad hose and snug up the bolt. I don't know the specific torque specs so all I can tell you is don't reaf on it.
Start the car for a few seconds to prime the oil cooler and shut-er down again. Check the oil and add if necessary. There you go. |
