Brake Problems

2003 Taurus SEL
On a recent trip to Florida the brake pedal went almost to the floor while driving. This is the only time it happened, the brakes pads, etc checked out ok, but the pedal does go slowly to the floor when pressed hard. I know that it is probably the power assist(booster), but there is some brake fluid leaking from where the master cylinder and power assist joins. Does this mean that the master cylinder is leaking or does the power assist contain some brake fluid as well that can leak.
Thanks for any info you can provide
Jon

Re: Brake Problems

the booster has no fluid in it. if there is a leak that you can see at the point were the M/C meets the booster then the master cylinder is leaking.

would a leaking master cylinder cause a similar problem to a faulty power assist? or would I be looking at replacing the cylinder and booster?

Re: Brake Problems

What you're describing is an internal hydraulic leak in the master cylinder. Happens to all makes, all models of vehicles. Easiest fix is to replace with a new or rebuilt master cylinder from a store that provides a lifetime replacement guarantee.

Re: Brake Problems

You can rebuild your master cylinder. I never did it but here it isn't to hard. They sell the kit at autozone or some other aftermarket store.not sure new price verse rebuild kit. You can test the booster. I was told with the car off pump brakes till pedal gets hard and keep light pressure on pedal while you start the car pedal should go down when car is started. keep in mind I am no expert but learn by doing all my own work on my cars...(and asking for help and advise)

Re: Brake Problems

Go with a new or rebuilt unit. You will have some warranty. If you try to rebuild the master cylinder, you need cylinder hones to do a proper job. It is a fairly simple task, but it is very technical. It is not a fast repair. Patience is really needed.
