I would first check the fuel pressure at the fuel rails. How well is this car maintained? Do you regularly change the fluids, clean injectors, replace filters, replace plugs and plug wires, etc? Restrictive exhaust can also cause these symptoms. How many miles on this car?

With only 150k miles, you should have enough life left for several more good years.
The fuel filter change is way overdue if it's the original. The injectors are not in the best shape if you don't occasionally run some cleaner through the system.

The Fuel Rail(s) sits atop the intake manifold configured to deliver pressurized fuel to each injector. Somewhere on the Fuel Rail(s) is the Test Port where a pressure gauge can be attached. The port should have a Cap (cover) that unscrews.

The pressure reading is normally taken with the engine running, it should be between 30psi & 45psi on your 1996 Conti.

However, in your case where the engine wont run, the pressure is tested by cycling the ignition key on/off several times (3 to 5 times) until the attached gauge reaches maximum pressure reading. The reason for cycling the ignition key; the fuel pump runs for only one second at key on, then it should again run at engine cranking, and start-up with signals from the PCM.

If you have key on pressure, and no cranking pressure, the problems shifts toward the PCM signal.

Backyard mechanics will check for fuel pressure in the rails by depressing the test port valve slightly, this can SPRAY FUEL at 45psi all over the engine compartment, all over your Cigar (possibly extinguishing it), in your mouth and eyes, etc. Not recommended for most people, but... this test does have it's time and place too. Imagine how much air blows from a tire Valve Stem when the valve is pressed, it's like that 'cept it's fuel.

These tests can help identify a bad fuel pump.
A severely clogged fuel filter can also be a problem.
Air filter should always be free flowing.

Be absolutely sure your Fuel Inertia Cutoff Switch isn't tripped. Tripped Inertia switch = No fuel.
Also, be sure there's fuel in the tank.

Yes, hitting it (simulates an accident) pops the switch and cuts the fuel. Pressing the button in resets the switch and sends current to the fuel pump.

Some auto parts stores have tool loaner programs, you would just borrow one.

If you'd like to add one to your collection, they run $15/$30 depending on where you get it. Normally, any place with a automotive tool section will have one.

Their also on ebay if you'd like to see what they look like. They come with instructions too.
