Using full synthetic ATF in 05 Camry
I just bought 8 qts. Of Valvoline Dexron-VI full synthetic ATF @ $4.24 a qrt. As usually I am buying things and then asking questions…
Can I use it on 05 Camry? I know it calls for Toyota Type IV ATF ($6.99 @ local dealer) , but supposedly full synthetic is better. Does anyone have had the experience using it on his Camry? Thanks, |

Re: Using full synthetic ATF in 05 Camry
My friend's trucks run full synthetics. The Allisons in GMs and Freightliners call for it.

Re: Using full synthetic ATF in 05 Camry
Well, I changed the ATF to that Valvoline Synthetic Dexron VI. As usually having second thoughts about it though. I probably should of “flushed” the system with regular dexron III (lots of crud came out of it) and when all the old stuff is out repeat it again with synthetic. I am not sure at what rate the new fluid is mixing with the old one, I tried doing it on the cold transmission so there is less mixing. I used all of the 8 quarts I bought and had to by one more, just to make the level. It kinda sucks that fluid color is not quite as fresh looking as the new fluid but its much better looking then the old one was. I’ll probably run this fluid till the next oil (engine) change and do it again, only using cheap ATF first, or it’s not worse mixing in cheap ATF into synthetic?
I also have a bottle of LubeGard ATF supplement that I previously used in other Toyota. Should I use it in Dexron VI or i've done enough "damage" and should just leave it alone? Thanks! & sory for the lengthy post. I also thought I’d share the experience of changing the fluid, in case someone is planning on doing it themselves. I disconnected the inlet hose from the radiator, inserted the funnel into the dipstick receptacle and started the car hoping it will pump ot the old ATF while I am adding fresh one. As soon as (my daughter) started the engine I heard a strange noise, like someone was engaging the starter while the engine is on, so I told her to shut it down. I figured it must be the air sucked in from the other end of the “cooler” inside the radiator is causing tranny not be so happy. So I just plugged the hole with my finger while balancing other hand on top of the funnel with a bottle of the ATF…. Anyway, this approach worked fine, no more noise and it pumped the old liquid as it should.
