Question manual transmission fluid type

1983 Camaro Berlinetta V6 2.8L 5spd transmission

I checked with AutoZone on what type of transmission fluid to change my manual tranny fluid with......they told me Automatic Tranny Fluid. I trusted them and drained my old fluid. When doing so, it didnt appear to be auto tranny fluid coming out, but more like some sort of gear oil. I replaced the fluid with auto tranny fluid like they said to do. I have a Haynes manual also and it doesnt say what type of fluid to use.

Did I put the correct manual tranny fluid in it?

thanx.

Re: manual transmission fluid type

Auto trans fluid isn't the right fluid. It should be 70wt gear oil unless it is a "World Class" T5, which yours isn't if it is the factory original. The WC T5's used auto trans fluid.

Re: manual transmission fluid type

I have called quite a few auto parts stores around me, and they have all told me "Dexron II or Dexron III" auto trans fluid. I have also tried doing a search via Google for manual transmission fluid types, and came up with nothing. I still dunno what fluid to use. I need more information.

Dextron is correct for the WC T5's that were used in V8 powered cars. The 4 & 6 cylinder cars didn't get the WC (World CLass) T5's, just plain old T5's.

Re: manual transmission fluid type

I called three different transmission shops and they all said the same thing.

Re: manual transmission fluid type

I know it seems strange, but i believe what i was told, just because three different trans shops and all the Parts houses all said the same thing about it.

I called coker, fleet, liberty, AZ, "o'reallys", American camaro and firebird, and a few dealerships as well and they all confirmed ATF is to be used. I mentioned the difference in color, they said it might have had some DEX II left over in it, just be sure to get it drained good before you refill it.
