71 Pontiac Gt-37

Hey guys. Im pretty new at this, so forgive me for my lack of knowledge. I don't know much about cars at all for that matter.
But here's what I got; Ive got a 1971 GT-37, and it hasn't been started since 1992. This car is completely badass. I remember when it used to run, and it was awesome. I want to get it going again, and havent even started it. I dont want to cause any damage. My dad says if I go and start it now, the push-rods would probably bend. If any of you can offer me some advice on what to do in the short-term to get this atleast running, I'd really appreciate it.
Other things to consider:
*Its got a 455 in it (8 cylinders, not original engine)
*Concerned the cylinders may be rusted out.

I'm willing to spend a few bucks to get this thing running again, but like I said, it hasnt run in 12 years. Any idea of how much this will cost me and what to do? I've never restored a car before. Thanks

Re: 71 Pontiac Gt-37

There are several things to do. First see if the engine spins freely. If it does, then you know it isn't rusted up or locked up. If you bend a few push rods no big deal, but if it moves, I doubt that will happen.
If it doesn't move, then hose down the spark plugs with wd-40 or liquid wrench. Take them out and pump in disel fuel, or a mix of disel, marvel mystery oil, and maybe karosen(sp). This has worked for a lot of people in the past to get pistons loose so the motor can be turned over. It may take several weeks before it eats through the rust. Just make sure the cylinders stay full, and every once in a while work the crank back and forth a little. Eventually you will be able to turn it.
Then drain it all out and replace a few of the gaksets if not all. Fill it back up with oil and prime it before you try to start it.
The carb needs to be rebuilt, or atleast cleaned out. You would be surprized at what might decide to take up residence.
Disconnect the gas tank. It is probably filled with varnish.
Replace the rubber hoses. Especially the fuel lines to the pump. You also want to drain and refill the radiator.
Run a gas can for your fuel till you can get the gas tank cleaned out.
This should start you out.
