Quadra-Trac 2; U-Turn Chatter
I have a 99 GC w/ the Quadra-Trac 2 system. At low speeds and hard turns I am getting a fairly loud moaning / grinding / chattering coming from the mid to back of the vehicle. The jeep has 93k miles.
I'm not sure if it's related but I started noticing this recently after it was towed for being illeaglly parked (bastards...). Also, if you put it in neutral while it's making the noise it gets way worse. As soon as you straighten out the wheel - everything is fine. The neutral thing causes me to think it's in the transfer case but I just can't tell - any advice?? |

Re: Quadra-Trac 2; U-Turn Chatter
I have a similar problem with a 95 GC; same drivetrain. Was told by a mechanic and several forum readers it is the viscous coupling in the transfer case. Rebuilt case is about $900 and the part alone is $350-$400. Mine does not seem as severe as yours. Only thumps and bumps at very low speeds (parking) during sharp turns. Good luck. I'm going to ride mine until it craps out

Re: Quadra-Trac 2; U-Turn Chatter
95 is not the same as 99.It sounds like it could be the tcase, which has an entirely different coupler than the older ones. But I have seen more problems caused by the differentials .The diffs and tcase all use a pump to apply clutches to lock. The one in the t case is called a progressive coupler
and the ones in the axles are called vari lock.Usually the axles make the moaning sound. You can try changing the fluid in the axles and the tcase. The coupler in the tcase is not sealed like the old viscous,it uses the tcase fluid to work.It does not take atf,it uses something that Chrysler calls 247 fluid which is some type of Mobil hydraulic fluid,I think it is like Mobil 424,because when that tcase first came out,it used atf but they switched it because of noise problems and before chrysler had the oil we had to get the mobil stuff. There was a bulletin on that a long time ago. Also if you change the diff fluid make sure you put limited slip additive in the front and rear. |
