2 quick questions, easy answers im sure...
I was just curious, but if the VR4 has an 8:1 compression ratio with twin turbos, and the SL's have a 10:1 compression ratio with no turbos, then how much power would an SL put out with a twin turbo conversion? I mean a VR4 engine without the turbos would be a waste. Is it even safe? What internals would HAVE to be changed, if any... or would you simply have to use the VR4 engine?
Also, off topic from the first question, but I just bought a UP Short Throw shifter, and I'm having some small problems. It's very hard to get into reverse and kinda tough to get into 5th. I have to just about use all my strength to force the shifter to the right. I read the install instructions on 3SX, and it says something about the 94's having to put the 2 washers towards the rear of the shifter to kinda push the shifter forward. I don't know if anyones ever had this problem and if there's an easy tweak to fix it, or maybe I have the spring on wrong, but I'm almost 100% sure it's on perfect.

i had the same problem with mine. I removed it specifically for that reason. I dont know what brand it was, because it was installed by the previous owner.
if you do find a fix, i would be interested in what exactly is involved...maybe i'd throw mine back on. for the engines...VR-4 engine with no turbos will just not make that much power...kind of a waste like you said. You can put turbos on an SL engine without changing pistons, but you risk knock beyond stock boost levels. Im sure others will have more feedback on that. GL man |

About the tt conversion I think they list all the parts u need to do it in the FAQs and for the Short shifter problem I thought short shifters were naturally harder to shift because there is a lower ( how would u put this in words) breaker bar effect I guess is a way to put it. i know someone posted something about the free short shifter and in the forum they say why it is harder to shift. but i don't know if it would be harder on other gears E.X. 5th and reverse

I don't really know why it's harder to get into 5th gear or reverse... it's not hard to get in it's more like it's hard to push the shifter over to the right to access the gears. Honestly the shifter doesn't seem to be much shorter than stock, which is kind of a dissappointment, but if I can get it working better, than it'll be good enough for me. The overall design doesn't seem too great, idk maybe it's an old model. The bottom nut that is used to adjust the shifter hits part of the stock holder when shifting into first. I guess you get what you pay for... idk, any ideas?

I have the same shifter and had the same problem so what i did was i took the lever from the UP shifter and the base from my stock one and i put them together. I dont really know why it worked so well but it works great. It might be because the base of the UP shifter was just not made to the right specs. But i definatley recommend trying this out.

Well, very little modding did the trick. I just had to remove the white plastic spacer from inside the aftermarket lever so the stock threaded peice would fit inside. Also, I had to switch the peice at the bottom of the lever that the gear changer slides onto so that instead of it facing outward, it faces inward. I had to do this because the aftermarket lever was designed a bit differently and it stuck out too far, preventing me from sliding it on. But turing it around did the trick. Now I'm happy, it feels stock and goes into each gear very easily. Thanks JeenyusVR4 for the tip-off.

I totally forgot to warn you about having to switch the lever onto the inside but i looks like you easily figured it out yourself. I'm glad that my idea helped you out. Pass on the great idea... but remember that it was my who came up with the idea........ I should patent the idea!!!

i don't know too much about the tt side for this car, but as for the shifter, what i did on mine was great! my friend had an extra stock shifter [he got a short shifter] so i gave him 20 bucks for it. but i ended up taking a hack saw to it and just sawed of the top half. then i went on top of the actual tranny and drilled some holes at where the linkage connects [vertical shifts only]. my friend ended up taking my stock shifter and putting it in his car and did the same thing. it runs great. i had a tranny problem, but it wasn't related to this. my friend been driving like this for a while now, and it shifts great.
