Smile A/C Needs Recharging

Hi all. I tried my A/C a couple of weeks ago while it was warm and it would not cool the car. I can only assume the freon is low. I saw these recharge kits at the auto stores and am thinking about recharging my system with one of those. I found what I think is the A/C connection. What I found was a black plastic cap over a schraeder valve on the driver center part of the fire wall. Is this where I would connect the recharger? Thanks.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

Before you try to re-charge the system, what is the model year and engine in your Intrigue? Also do you have the manual or automatic climate control system? some people have reported problems with the AC that was more then the freon being low. there might be some folks that can help you.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

That should be the proper place to recharge it, keep in mind that you can overfill the system, so you should probably obtain a kit with a gauge, and then find out the correct value to charge it too, which could probably be obtained from a FSM, or perhaps AllDataDIY, or your best bet would be the dealership service dept.

What dtownfb said does have some merit though, there could be other causes, but if I was in your situation, I would start by ruling out the cheap things first, so I say go ahead and see if it needs recharged.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

Thanks for the replies. I bought a recharge kit yesterday and it does have the gauge on it. I have a 1999 Intrigue and it has the automatic climate control system. That's the one where you can set the temperature and it will maintain it, correct?
If it evers warms up again, I will recharge and let you know what I find. Thanks again.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

Before you re-charge the A/C you must find the leakfirst, no point in killing our air. Here in Canada it is ilegal to sell A/C re-charge kits. The leak must be fixed before any freon is added

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

Meh it might not even need recharging, thats why he bought the one with the gauge remember? I say if it fixes it, then go for it. I think the air will be just fine, everytime you and I exhale we kill a little bit of the air, I for one am not going to stop breathing though.

I really didnt know it was illegal to sell recharge kits in Canada...crazy. Gotta love the good ol US of A.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

First of all, I bought one of those recharge kits at the auto store. Unfortunately it does not fit the low pressure fitting. Anyone else have this problem?
Secondly, I thought the reason the automotive people went to the 134R cooling was to get away from R-12 which was the culprit in the ozone. Makes no sense they would replace one ozone depleter with another. I think 134R is safe IMHO.

Thumbs up Re: A/C Needs Recharging

I took the recharger kit back to the auto store and told them it would not fit my a/c fitting. They took it to my car and tried and agreed. They brought another out and it connected easily. They gave me the new one and I left. Simple solution but it took two days to figure out. Thanks for all of the replies.

Re: A/C Needs Recharging

Did you ever get to recharge your system? Any potential problems I should look for when I try to do mine?
