I don´t whether I told you in my mails about the "Map of France"-M1. Just to make sure. I advise you to think twice where to put the borders between the white and blue paint job since the decals are kind of transparent. To show you what I mean I just include a pic of my M1 where you can see through the map-decals and see, where I chose to border the white and blue paint.



But I´m sure you thought about that already

So have fun with the build...I´m excited to see what you can will make out of this challenging project.

I tried to get it from Hiroboy.com but he wasn't able to mix the colour

I also thought that hey! they maybe used the blue from the BMW logo so I found a pantone number for that too. But I haven't found a way to translate Pantone numbers into PPG codes or RAL codes.

I do have Tamiya Light Blue and Tamiya French blue in reserve.

Ok I went to the car center, but my ex-collegue was working day-off, so here what I found myself:

- I didn't see any "331" in Opel color range.
- I found a "Turkis Metallized", so surely not the good color.
- I found a turkis blue which Opel code number is 629.

I don't know more till now...

Next step, meet another friend who works in a Opel center !
I think that this "331 pastel turkis" is a former color, not available any more in car center color range, because they mostly sell color pencil or cans.
But an opel center must have all color history of the brand and all color code somewhere to be able to reproduce them.
I must clear my mind about this 629 turkis blue or see if the 331 code matches some color, even not available any more.
because if it is really the right code and so the right color, any paint maker would be able to make it with RAL code conversion or something like that (even only the Opel code...?)

Please don't go to too much trouble though. I guess that the Renaissance reference is at best an approximation and not the original colour (somehow I can't imagine BMW painting their car in an Opel colour )

It is a nice challenge though to try and find it!

I have to say that I am totally surpirsied/frustrated by the lack of research material I can find for this car. It's almost as if the whole BMW M1 IMSA/Lemans team history just dropped into a blackhole in cyberspace

I found one new reference picture yesterday that proved what I had already guessed - the vent holes on the front spoiler were closed up.

you're welcome ! that's a pleasure trying to help if I can.

Yes I also think that this reference is the closest one found by Renaissance, but as it is a old one maybe there is a reason, I cannot believe that this is the only reference close to the original car color...

Nevertheless, i had a few free time in the afternoon, after my professional rendez-vous.
Then I went to the Opel car center and met my friend. he was almost happy to see me and to talk a little with me, no customer in the whole afternoon...!

I asked there for the Opel color code given by Renaissance.
331 really is an Opel code, but a former one as I thought it was.
It's not available any more, Opel releases paints only from the 90's till now. Every other paint reference is considered as "discontinued".
So Opel cannot provide it any more.

But 331 is the right code, maybe that would help...

I also asked for the 629 code, but this doesn't appear to be a current code, even if it was given in a car center's colors reference book...?!?
no need to try to understand something...
The "spare parts service" manager I met made the search with color name, too, and told me there isn't any "pastel turkis blue" and even no "turkis blue" in the actual Opel color range.

so 331 reference seems to be the only clue to the original paint (well, as indicated by Renaissance - even if it's strange to see that color on a recent TK when such color is discontinued... does Renaissance have any color table or something like that...?).

I hope it helps.

I wouldn't say it could be a problem if you cannot obtain a paint mix from 331 opel turkis blue, because as you ever noticed it color really seems close to light blue or french blue as available in Tamiya range...
an Opel color for a BMW car may only be Renaissance choice to allow builders to get a close color paint.

So here stops what I could try to do to answer your question...

Opel 331 "PASTELLTUERKIS" is available from, for example, Glasurit. It's a solid colour used from 1970 to 1980 and is available either as one requiring (water-based) or not requiring (acrylic two-component) clearcoat. They offer three variants - standard, "blue" or "lighter". Good luck

Since this is post #44 and it will be exactly one month ago tomorrow that we started this thread, I guess it's about time that I actually post some work on this beast.

First though, thanks again guys for your help on the paint issue - much appreciated!

This is with out doubt the worst fitting and molded kit I have ever had my hands on except for the Monogram Lotus Esprit. Here are just a few of the things I'll need to do to the body in addition to adding the trans-kit parts.


The BMW "kidney" grille more resembled a BMW "squashed tomato" grille!! It was totally misshaped On this photo I have already reshaped it with a sanding stick to get it straight enough to fit it to the body



Bits to remove and sink marks to be filled...



Bad fits and "glunky" molding...




After removing the flash and general sanding to fit, the first "real" work was to remove the kit hood to replace it with the Renaissance trans-kit part.

I drilled out the four corners and joined the dots with my trusty Hasegawa p/e saws (they have really useful shapes and cut sizes)





Done....and then I found confirmed what you all knew already - I am a complete imbecile!! I just assumed that the Renaissance part would be an exact fit to the kit part. Doh!



...and I was so pleased with myself at so cleanly cutting out the Revell hood

Lesson learned - I should have put the new part to the kit and outlined around it.

I fixed it by cutting off the missing part from the kit, adding styren strips around the edges and a few rounds of putty/sandstick.





Glued the wheel arches on with 5-minute epoxy..



2,5 days of putty, sanding, primer (ad nauseum) and I am getting close to finished. Still a few eye-sores to be fixed...
