1999 Corolla Timing Chain Removal/Installation
My '99 corolla's engine was making noise the other day, checked the oil and it was fine, So I tore off the Valve cover. (Pinpointed the sound to the head) Upon pulling off the valve cover, I found that my timing chain was loose between the two cams. I'm about to tear the thing down to get a closer look, hopefully all it'll need is a new timing chain and maybe a tensioner. I used to be a mazda tech, but never got around to putting a
timing chain on anything newer than a '70s model vehicle. (one cam) I was wondering if anyone could post a removal/installation step by step guide. I checked autozone's listing of service manuals, but they didn't have anything for a '99 corolla. Figures, I didn't expect 'em to have anything for my '74 F100... oh well, what can ya' do? Any help will be appreciated.

ok, here's an update. I've taken everything off that was in my way, excluding timing chain cover, and the crank pulley. While trying to get the No. 1 piston at top dead center, the crank locked up on me. I only have two theories on this. 1) some how the timing chain is bunching up, due to it's extreme loosenes... which I hope is the case 2) A valve is bent due to the timing chain jumping a tooth, and the No. 1 piston is running into it as I turn the crank by hand. I'm gonna have to explore this further, I'll keep a post running, and I'd still like to see some instructions if possible... lol Oh yeah, anyone have any idea if this is an interference engine? I know mazda's policy was timing belt on non interference, and timing chain on interference run engines. No clue about toyota though. I checked the FAQ and noted the website with listing of interference/nonintereference engines, but it was a Gates (belt co.) website so they didn't appear to have timing chains listed

Yet another update... this motor is intereference run, and the piston did bend a valve. Replaced this motor with one from a 99 prism, and all is well again. Thank god for the bone yard!
