90 Lincoln Towncar signature, Brake lights & Hazards

Neither are working at all. Fuses checked, Power distribution box checked, replaced multifunction switch. This is getting frustrating now. Does anyone have any idea's for this problem. Is there something that has to be done after the multifunction switch is replaced, headlights work, dash lights work, inside lights work, turn signals work. I need suggestions Please.

Re: 90 Lincoln Towncar signature, Brake lights & Hazards

Wow, do you see what time it is? Are you still there?

Ok, I guess you might be there still.. HI!

I think you might be referring to the Multifunction Switch incorrectly.. that's the one inside the steering column under the steering wheel? Is that the one you replaced? That's OK, it was most likely ready to fail anyway being that old

So, I'm thinking you're calling the BOO Switch the MfS? The BOO (Brake On Off) or brake pedal switch is the most likely culprit in this scenario.
It's located where it can touch the Brake Pedal arm, and it will fail from time to time and cause this problem. Sometimes it's just not touching the pedal arm properly and needs adjustment, sometimes the wires to the switch were disconnected or loose, and sometimes the switch itself just quits working.

That was also checked, the switch at the brake pedal. Yes the MultiFunction switch in the steering column was replaced. Maybe I should have someone check the one at the brake pedal again to make sure.

It is either early for some or late for others..lol

Thank you for responding

Ok, in the Power Distribution Box, under the hood.... ( I know... check anyway )

There's a large 20A fuse marked "Hazard lights". You'll see that reference on the box Cover. Check and/or replace that one with a known good one.

Also, verify the BOO Switch is properly connected and working. To test the BOO switch you can disconnect the connector plug, jam a loop of wire or equivalent into the connector bridging the connection, the brake lamps should light. Don't let that jumper wire hit anything metal, BOOM!

Here's the BOO switch in your car:

This BOO will also fit: Ford Taurus BOO Kit
SW-6170
3f1Z-13480-AA ($15 at Dealer)

Also, are you sure the BULBS are working?

Well, that sucks. It's time for a qualified electrician to do all these tests.
If there's no power at the BOO switch, the power source needs to be traced backward to where-ever it's failing.

If a Volt tester verifies there's no power on either wire at the BOO switch, I would also touch a 12v hot wire to the wires at the back of the BOO switch to see if the lamps light.

Again, I sure hope those BULBS are known to be good !!

You think that all the bulbs could go out at the same time? I said that tonight to just replace them all. Will let him know what you suggested.

Thank you again

Well, I've seen some strange things in my time, so if I was trying to fix this problem I would test the bulbs too. They certainly don't need replacement if they test OK.

I hope your not paying anyone to do all this... whomever that is shouldn't need my advice if they're charging you...

I'm starting to wish you were closer to So. California

PS.. I love your avatar.. very peaceful looking place

No I haven't paid anyone yet.... can't afford to. I need to get it fixed, to many are dependant on this vehicle.

The avatar is a photo I took last summer. I do alot of photography, its one of my hobbies I truely enjoy. Haven't had much time the last two years been in school earning an associates degree in Computer Network Engineering. I hope to find a job when I am finished this month. Then I can either fix this car or get a replacement...lol Wishful Thinking...

Re: 90 Lincoln Towncar signature, Brake lights & Hazards

The problem was a broken wire under the hood at the box. I went to a mechanic and they found it and fixed it. They work good now.

Thank you for all of your help
