Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
Just make sure you do it EXACTLY as Wolfman says. This dude is a VERY experienced Saturn tech and knows what he's talking about.

Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
Just do what the procedure says.. if you use sythetic and it does not work. then you wasted that extra money on nothing. plus you can not go back to conventional

Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
That website is down right now...
That post for the "reverse cure" is about.. taking your favorite transmission additive that is not a sealant and adding it to your auto transmiision. Ensure you have the correct amount of ATF in the transmission.. then place car's rear bumper up against something stationary while the car is running and left in reverse for 30 minutes. Ensure the car doesn't overheat meaning that your radiator fan works. Do not leave the car unattended. If the transmission fluid has not been changed in its history.. get some ATF from Walmart. Change the fluid only and add the additive first. Do the procedure then change out the filter and fluid. Extra cost: $20 The procedure is done since your car has a hydralic/pressure transmission. Like most cars.. never used in reverse much therefore the "crap" builds up in the passageways and solenoids. In this transmission, reverse is shared with D2. If the procedure works, you will see the reverse slam go away since the additive will assist in cleaning. If it does then go get another transmission filter and your 4 plus quarts of your favorite ATF ( includes synthetic ) and you'll be good for another prescribed 30k... Be aware that it is not the cure all. This transmission has some ills like valve body, actuator problems, dif pin and input nut loosening. There is a plug on top ( buss plate ) of the transmission held on with a 7mm bolt. Make sure it is very clean at that connect and there is no fluid inside. If you are not in any hurry, reading the advised procedure from the website is more thorough. |

can the fix make things worse?
Also I am not sure where the bolt you are talking about is located? |

Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
The "reverse slam procedure " is as above. It will not make worse the conditions that you are now experiencing.
Don't worry about the below until you do the procedure as referenced. The 7mm bolt located in the middle of the connector on top of the "buss plate" has numerous electrical wires about it. It is below the brake master cylinder and in back of your battery. It may appear like alot of crap around it. Wipe the crap away first. This Saturn transmission need good electrical connections and good alternator output. If you are going to try to repair or maintain this Saturn... spend the $17 on a Haynes Manual to know your way about this car. It is very easy to maintain but take the philosphy that half the money you save in maintaining it yourself instead of a repair shop or oil change joint, you buy better tools to maintain it... its rewards are compounding. |

Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
Opps, it did make things worse.
![]() ![]() Reverse is a lot worse now. All other gears are great better than they used to be, but reverse went from slam to SLAM!!!! Did I do something wrong. I followed the procedure exactly (I think). New fluid (Proline pep boys brand), factory filter, additive, bricks behind wheels and reverse for 30 minutes (probably 40).Guess I will pony up the money to get it fixed right, or at least diagnosed so I can try and fix it myself. Although I am not to fond of trannys! Maybe I should cut my losses and trade the car in. |

Re: Slammin into Reverse with foot on brake!!!
1996 SL1 153K. My car has the same problem. It seems to occur more often when the car is warm. Had a transmission fluid change including filter with synthetic. Also, when moving from forward to reverse I now come to a complete stop. BEFORE putting the car in reverse I put the car in park. Wait for the transmission to disengage then put it in reverse. Doing it this way I never get the reverse slam anymore. It's cheap and works for me.
