Ss?

I was at an auction yesterday, and they rolled through a LS1 SSZ28 Camaro, I think. It had the hoodscoop, 5-star chrome wheels (just 5 star, not the 5 star wheels where the spokes actually split and there are then 10, did that make sense?), SS on the fender. I couldn't see the backend to see if it had SS on the back or the dual exhaust to one side instead of one tailpipe on both sides. It did have the SS spoiler. When they popped the hood, it did not have the ram-air filter box sitting on top by the scoop. It just looked like a regular Z28 engine. I always thought that the SS and WS6 had the actuall ram-air. I know they both have the ram-air hoodscoop but, this car did not have the ram-air filter box on the engine. Was this a clone or maybe had an engine swap. Just curious. It was around year 2000(?) it had the rounded front clip on it.

Re: Ss?

No, the SS and WS6's aren't 'true' ram air with the intake sitting behind the scoop. They ALL (SS, Z28, TA, WS6...etc) have the intake sitting front and center. And they also all came with split-rear exhaust. Only the V6's had the single-exit exhaust. So, it probably was an SS.

That was the '96 SS, they didn't have the SS untill that year. I don't remember what other years had the dual tips on one side.

Re: Ss?

No V8 f-bodies came with single-side dual exhaust. The only ones I've seen like that are ones with SLP's 2OTL catback.

Re: Ss?

Really?

I have never seen an f-body with dual exhaust on the same side. with all the ones running around here, I figured I would have seen one by now.

Re: Ss?

I'm still amazed at my own ignorance and how I have never seen one like that in my life.

Re: Ss?

I know that he SS Camaro doesn't have as good of an airbox as the WS6 stock for stock. Danno's old Camaro SS didn't come with as large of an airbox as my WS6 (His was a 2002, and my WS6 is a 2001). In addition the Camaro SS's ram air is a joke. GM anticipated for the air to go around in a circle, and then swirl into the airbox = LAME. With the WS6 all you have to do is cut out the rear clip around the ram air scoop. It will still have a rain guard up front, but it will vastly increase your airflow. I just did the mod recently.

Anyways, I wouldn't go buying an SS from an auction, as there are alot of clones. Obviously the SS's have better resale value then the regular Z28's.

Re: Ss?

No. I wouldn't buy anything like that from an auction either.

I know I'm not smoking crack but, aren't the SS and WS6 cars when you pop the hood on the SS the open filter is right there on top of the intake (under the scoop)? Then on the WS6 the open filter is right on top of the radiator or in front of the throttle body (behind the scoop)? I don't know if this will help but there is a pic of it at www.clintonautoauction.com, then click featured items, then scroll down the pics. Thanks.

Re: Ss?

No, the intakes on both cars are in the same location. Front and center, basically on top of the radiator w/ a lid. Draws in air from under the car, as opposed to 'true' ram air. But there are conversions for both to create a 'true' ram air affect.

Re: Ss?

Yes, the INTAKE MANIFOLD is on the center of the engine on top. But the air INLET with an OPEN AIR FILTER is ontop of the INTAKE MANIFOLD right under the scoop on an SS. On a WS6 the OPEN AIR FILTER is right behind the scoops. Basically the same spot where the AIR FILTER BOX is on a regular T/A, right on top of the radiator but it's an open box so the air actually gets the ram effect through the filter.

I know I've seen these on factory SS's and WS6's (ram air).
Or am I just smoking crack???
