94 S-10 Will not hold timing

94 S-10, 4.3L, 2WD. There is a timing problem code in memory, but does not specify what it is. We have replaced the brain, new distributor, complete tune-up, and knock sensors. We received this vehicle after severals friends and family of this person worked on it. The only thing not done on this vehicle is to check gear timing marks. Any ideas ?
