timing chain

I own a 1992 mercury grand marquis. It is a beautiful car, well the other day i was driving it and the timing chain snapped. How much would it cost for a new timing chain, and could anything else be ruined on the engine when a timing chain breaks?

Re: timing chain

no expert but I am pretty sure that valves and/or pistons can be severely damaged by the loss of the timing chain. if you know a trustworthy mechanic have him check it out. also I believe there is a new and improved timing chain, at least there is for my 89. good luck, let us know

Re: timing chain

well, I talked to my mechanic and he said it would probably cost around $1000 for a different engine and another $500 for labor what do u guys think i should do. Would it be worth it?opcorn: It is a beautiful car, especially for it being a 1992.

Re: timing chain

Okay you have an early 92 (made before 2/18/92)without electornic overdrive lockout. If you do buy another engine make sure it has a 2 bolt starter and not a 3 bolt. Mid 92 and newer engines will not fit your car even though they look the same. This is what will fit.

CROWN VICTORIA 92 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W), 2 bolt starter (thru 2/18/92)

GRAND MARQUIS 92 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W), 2 bolt starter (thru 2/18/92)

LINCOLN TOWN CAR 91 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W)

LINCOLN TOWN CAR 92 (8-280, 4.6L, VIN W), 2 bolt starter (thru 10/91)
