I want to buy a caddy....

Hey, i currently own a 1992 5.0L mustang, but i think i wanna buy a caddy. I have always liked big cars, smooth ride, confort, its like you are bringing your living room with you everywhere you go. I was looking at late 70s and early 80s caddys but i wouldnt mind the 72 and older because that would get rid of my problem. Here is my problem, yes i like big cars, for the reasons i named before but the thing is, those years (late 70s and early 80s) are horrible performance wise. I mean a big 7.0L v8 that produces next to nothing and burns gas like there is no tomorrow isn't too appealing. So if i were to get one, i would obviously bug a more decent engine in it, i was thinking about maybe a 1969 455cu, would that work? Or what engines do you guys recommand to put in a caddilac? I wont be doing the work myself because i dont have the knowledge to do so...will putting a new engine and tranny will do it or do i have to messs around with suspensions and stuff like that?Give me some recommandations and some prices to go with that....

thanks

Re: I want to buy a caddy....

If you're gonna buy a '72 or older Cadillac, I'd stick with the engine that's in there! You have to remember, the Cadillac engines are torque monsters, meant for propeling a heavy vehicle quickly. And while a 1976 Cadillac 500 only made 190 HP, it has 360 lb-ft of torque. A Corvette engine barely makes that!
The engines are easy to soup up, to get 400 plus HP and well over 500 lbs-ft. I have a 1979 Deville that I removed the original 425 and installed a 1972 Cadillac 472 and with about $4,000 in engine work and parts, it makes around 400 HP and 530 lbs-ft of torque! Plus with the Cadillac engine, you will get better fuel mileage than a Chevy or Olds because the torque is down low.

Re: I want to buy a caddy....

I do have some pics, but they are older ones. I've owned the car since 1997 and have been working on it since. I am now in the process of putting a posi rear with disc brakes and 3.08 gears in it. So it will fly then!
But not just the '72 and older Cadillacs are the ones to look for. The later 500's used up until 1976 are great engines to modify! They are bullet proof in stock form and the same mods for the older ones work just as well.
I used to own a 1976 Sedan Deville. It was a great car, you couldn't kill the thing! And it rode great, had tons of room and you could almost park a Toyota in the trunk!
The 1977-79 Cadillacs with the 425's are very reliable as well, but the engine isn't quite as strong as the older 472 and 500's. If you're looking for just a reliable car, those ones are great!

Re: I want to buy a caddy....

I just got a '76 Sedan DeVille and was looking to open it up a bit. I noticed that the '70 500s had 400hp and mine has 190. Any tips on what to do or where to go to help this thing run better. Thanks in advance.

Re: I want to buy a caddy....

Stick with the Caddy engine they run very well. I have a bone stock 1979 Coupe de Ville, that I Drag Race and it runs 16.68 in the 1/4 all day long. It'll see mid 12's this year with the few mods I've made.
