Speedometer replacement - sticking

I have a 03 cavalier 5 speed and noticed something this winter. When its colder out sometimes my speedometer will be stuck at say 40mph and will not move. Other times it will work fine for a while and than start sticking, or just not work at all and stick at 0mph.

I've heard this is a common problem so I was wondering if anyone has replaced the speedometer and fixed the problem. I don't want to replace something and come to find out that didn't solve the problem and its something else so any advice is appreciated.

Re: Speedometer replacement - sticking

I had the same problem with my 04, had to replace the cluster. Cheapest place I cound find was Autocraft Electronics in Carrollton, TX 1-800-336-3998. Cost was less than $100.00.

Re: Speedometer replacement - sticking

Thanks for the information, wow if I knew it was that cheap i'd of fixed it a few weeks ago. Didn't want to put a ton of money into a car I am getting rid of in a few weeks. Someone told me it was like $300-400 for the cluster so I was hoping that wasn't true.

Re: Speedometer replacement - sticking

Thank you for posting about this. I have the same problem. I had posted about this a few months ago and had yet to figure out the problem. I have an 04 Cavalier but it only seems to stick when its cold out. It either sticks or it keeps going until its at the bottom until I can shut the engine off and let it cool. Then if I play with the ignition I can get it reset. I will try the remedy that was posted here. Thanks!
