Coolant in oil. What are the odds...

...that the motor is hosed? A little backstory:

Bought this car back in Jan knowing it had a bad head gasket. It's a 1990 Cougar LS 3.8. The guy says the radiator went bad, it overheated and they blew. The car runs fantastic, until the thermo opens and starts dumping copious amounts of coolant into the cumbustion chamber.

Anywho, the oil is indeed milky. I had to drive the car 8 miles home, but since then it's been sitting... yes, with the milky oil in the crankcase. I have all the parts and the time now to repair it next week, but should I waste my time? I'm worried that main bearings will be degraded.

An engine rebuild is not in my budget, only a head gasket repair.

Re: Coolant in oil. What are the odds...

the 3.8's were well known for thier head gasket issues. Is the engine hosed? Unfortunately, only way you can know is to pull the heads....not a fun job, and if nothing appears wrong in the top end, put it back together and cross your fingers.

Lot of "ifs" there
