97 sunfire abs light
hi my 97 2.2 sunfire-abs light comes on periodically. i used to work at a GM dealer (not mechanic) but i am aware of the wheel speed sensors-harness going to them cracked, etc. i replaced the rf sensor as per the code reader- right front wheel high acceleration, and it changed the symptoms but did not fix it. abs light cam on all the time before-now just occasionally. you can be parked and turn the steering wheel right to left and "low trac" light will come on, and many time will trip the abs light too. my qusetion is: should i put a new wheel speed sensor in (first one was used), i checked harness seems ok, but is there something else that i'm missing?it seems odd that you can be in park and turn the wheel and you can make it come on.sometimes i wish i still work at GM. the techs that worked with me aren't big on getting calls at home about cars they see all day.thanks

Re: 97 sunfire abs light
whoops my bad i see this is a cav forum. by the way sunfire, cavalier, sunbird, of all years share same wheel speed sensor-but there is a difference between right and left. they are easy to change GM part #22591938, and 22591939

Re: 97 sunfire abs light
it sounds like we have similar problem.first, you need to determine which wheel is giving you the problem.you will need the car scanned by an obd-2 reader, these are getting cheaper all the time. then, if it is say, right front wheel "high acceleration" or someting than you can sheck a couple of things: wiring going to the sensor are known to crack or break.you will need to peel the loom back and inspect the wires. if that checks out ok, you can look to see if the reluctor ring on the axle is still attatched or cracked. the sensor itself is problably the last thing to check. there is no test that i know of for the sensor itself. actually a guy told me something about a test-but i can not remember the details.maybe someone else knows here
