Re: Britain Says Schools Can Ban Muslim Veils

I think it's simple. The school has a dress code. If the students do not adhere to the dress code, they can be sent home or expelled.

The thing here is not that the school system is picking on someone because of their religion, but rather that they need to see the faces of the students for several reasons which have already been stated.

I've seen other instances of Muslims going to foreign countries and basically demanding that they get things or that things be a certain way for them when they arrive (see many of Monsterbengt's posts on the subject, he's in Sweden).

Is this to say that Muslims are in a position to demand what they want when they arrive in a new country? To me it seems this is the position they are taking; but I've always been of the opinion that "When in Rome, do as the Romans do". If you don't fit in for whatever reason, and are unwilling to change, then you can't complain about it.

Basically, if you're in Rome and it doesn't suit you, go somewhere else.

They're in no position to demand anything. If we live abroad or in a non-Muslim country, we have to adapt to there laws as long it does not conflict with our religion. My local Imam (one of the 6 that got arrested at the airport ) has been preaching to us about the situation we are facing here in USA.

Re: Britain Says Schools Can Ban Muslim Veils

not entirely related but

in the UK, there is a growing movement for the teaching in a mosque to be carried out in English instead of the traditional Arabic to

i) make it more accesible to young british born muslims
ii) make it more accessible to non-muslims by means of teaching the best/most exact words in english (to prevent mis-quoting)

do they teach in arabic or english in the states?

Both. Just like taking courses for Spanish. They say it in English and then repeat it in Spanish. Reading the Qu'ran in Arabic is highly recommended. Translating it into any other languages isn't going to be as accurate.
