60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

So, I started with my contribution to this nice idea of saluting the great Enzo Ferrari. I bought this Revell kit awhile ago and I never thought I would actually build it. I try to add as much as possible from the Studio27-PE-set for the Fujimi 365 GTS/4. If you think about getting this PE-Set for the Revell kit beware f.ex. that the brake discs in the kit are to small (diameterwise) for the PE-Set. So not everything can be used. But I´m very pleased to have something to make the kit-front grill disappear from the model. I also worked with BMF on the engine covers for the first time ever. It worked out well, although one side doesn´t look that good.
How does it work out so far? When you build this kit you will face massive (fitment) problems. The engine mounts need to be fixed, the wheel arches are molded to the body (which I have never seen before, nevertheless I fixed them to the chassis) and the wheels are just not right (Thanks to Martsmodels I have a replacement!). When you fit the engine onto the chassis and try to dryfit the body with the engine cover to ist, you will find out that the engine is too giht so that the engine will not be closing firmly. I will need to figure something out for that. I might end up leaving the engine cover open to display the nice V12.
Anyways I´d like to show what I´ve got so far.

Most of the engine parts will repainted to get the shine right. The body will be painted Ferrari-Red.

Comments and suggestions are welcome and don´t forget - I just started and this is just a WIP.

Looks good, though I'd paint the exhausts Tamiya Semi-Gloss Black followed by some MM Burnt Iron for a more authentic look.

Good start!

I was going to offer you some resin copies of the modified distributor caps I made for mine but I see you did just fine with out them

Looking forward to seeing this develop.

Me too!

I'm building this kit as well, so any tips etc will be much appreciated. I'll start a WIP thread soon but I've only got as far as assembling the body & puttying the join lines - front is easy but the rear needs plenty of care to keep the shape looking right.

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

Update-Time. I played with a lot of ideas andfinished the interior as well as most of the enginebay. I will add some more wiring and details, when the chassis meets the body. Especially the battery and some parts in the interior needs some more work. The PE-Set I used need some adjustments. The Studio27-Set can be used on the Revell-kit but you need to adjust most of the Plastic-Parts.
I will use some of the inspiration I got from the Klutz100-build and all the others present on AF. So thanks for sharing all of your work and giving me inspiration...Now some pictures.

I also started painting the body. First I glued the front and rear end onto the body. Revell delivers the body separated in three parts. That is something I needed to take care of before laying sown some paint onto the body. I primed the body using first grey and then white Tamiya-Primer. The sanded and prepped body was painted with TS-49 bright red. Three light coats and one wet coat. Now I will add the front Ferrari-badge and the the body will be clear coated using TS-13. Afterwards I will sand and polish the result...

Hopefully it will be finished soon...

Comments and suggestions are welcome and wanted, as always.

Robert

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona - Need HELP!

Another update. But this time - if you view it - I need your help with the wheels. First I´d like to show you pictures of the body being painted, clear coated and sanded to get the shine in the paint job. I will add a wax when I installed the BMF-chrome window trim. For the body, I only need to add all the accessories and then I should be finished with that.

An unclear coated and unpolished body shot for comparison:

Now the problem. When I started the project I used the rims from the Jaguar MK II because they are not as shiney and toyish as the Revell-Rims are. The more I look at the rims now I start to see that they are not "deep" enough. To show you what I mean, I add a comparison-pic (Revell-Ferarri-rim on the left; Jag-rim on the right with the tire).

The Revell rims for the kit are deeper so I start to worry about the overall looks of the model, when I stick with the Tamiya Jag-rims. Nevertheless, when I use the Revell rims, they need to be modified. But for this I need your help:
- Can I strip the chrome from these wheels? If so, what product (available in Germany and Europe) is best to use? Will a strip effect the "wires" within the wheels?
- What is the best way to get a chrome-look on the rims without having an airbrush? The best available colors over here are Tamiya´s and Revells and I also have Chrome silver BMF.

Thanks for your help in advance.

Robert

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

One of my favourite ferraris.
Build is looking great so far !
As for the wheels the shape of the kit wheels looks much better than the jag' wheels in my opinion.
I woud definatley try to tone down the chrome effect on those.
bleach (chlorine) is good for removing chrome, but the question is if the spokes will survive. I have had no problems at all with chlorine but you never know..

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

Okay, small update: I started to apply BMF for the window trim and the inside of the front bonnet to resemple a heating shield. I started to install the front grill from the Studio27-PE-Set. I still need to apply some parts of it.
I also put the original Revell-rims on the chassis to reach a decision, which one to use. I think, when I wheather these a little using the Tamiya wheathering-Set-D (Black=Oil stain) they might look fine. But please, tell me what you think. So for comparison I also show a pic of the Jag wheels on the chassis.

Original Revell-Rims:

Thanks for your help

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

Though the last update was not commented from anybody on the board, I will add this small update just to keep the thread in line with the build. If you guys want you can tell me what you think.
The build is almost completed now. I still have problems with the body since fitment is tight, so I might need to rework the rear of the chassis to make the body fit. Besides that I´m finished with the BMF and decided to go with the Revell wheels. I´m thinking about toning them down by applying a wash...
The last things I will need to take care of is the front bonnet, some wiring and the little extras like emblems, mirror and the wheels. But - enough said - now some pics:

Tell me what you think and what to do better.

Robert

Re: 60 years of Ferrari...WIP Ferrari 365 GTB/4 Daytona

Robert, the paint job is excellent! Great shine you have achieved

I have only a couple of ideas for you:
  1. If you don't have an airbrush you are screwed on toning down the chrome on the wheels which right now look too bright. I think I have a spare set of fujimi Daytona wheels from my build. If you consider moving away from wire wheels and want them, they are yours (if I can find them )
  2. In the engine bay, you might want to consider adding some plumbing to the brake servo and wiring to teh battery - if you are going to display with the hood open (as you say earlier) it might be worth the effort.
  3. The headlight covers look as if they would benefit form some panel line definition with some wash. What do you think? Maybe it's just the photo and my bad eyes!
  4. Was there really a cavallino on the rear of the Daytona? I am not sure.

Keep up the great work
