95 Explorer Sport Code 212

Hello.I have a 95 Ford Explorer sport. When it is cold it will not stay running at an idle. When it warms up it will idle but the idle is very irratic. If you floor board the gas it hesitates and stalls. It also has a random misfire at all speeds. It has 233,000 miles on it. It gets 150- 155 compression on all cylinders. The only code it gets without a check engine light is a code 212. It is OBD1. The code 212 says Loss of ignition diagnostic monitor signal/SPOUT curcuit grounded. My scanner says cannot control RPM during KOER high RPM test.Also when ever i turn on the A/C the RPMS drop to about 3-400RPMs. My fuel mileage has suffered graetly because of this. The engine ran great about two weeks ago.Please help. I have a pregnant wife whos expecting and i need a reliable car. THANKS alot.

Sounds like you may have an Idle Air Control (IAC) servo that is not working properly, or carboned passages for the IAC or throttle plate. You may be able to remove the IAC and clean it and the passages to get more life, but if the IAC is not moving, that won't help. You'll need to replace the device. I've been please with STP Throttle Body Cleaner. It's not too expensive, but is very quick to dissolve the carbon.

You may also want to inspect the Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor to make sure the elements are not dark gray or black. If so, clean the MAF and see if that helps. At a minimum, it will probably improve the fuel economy. CRC makes a cleaner specifically for MAF sensors and at least Advance Auto Parts/Parts America stocks it around here in Iowa.

You may also have a faulty coolant temperature sensor, but right now I'm leaning heavily towards the IAC.

I forgot to mention it has a 4.0 v6 and i have pulled off the AIC and it wasnt carboned up. But i have no Ohms meter to read if its bad or not. Ill try those things and see what happens. THanks....

Oh someone on another site told me to check for a green wire coming out of the SPOUT. Where is the Spout at? And i assume this green wire is a ground!
Please help and get back with me soon please!Thanks

I don't have the manual for a 1995 Explorer, so I'm not sure where the SPOUT connector is. It should be near the distributor/coil packs though with a little jumper connector installed.

If it were house wiring, your assumption that the green wire is ground would be a good one. However, I don't think you can assume that for the SPOUT.
