Power required by standard alternator fan?
Does anybody know the approximate amount of power absorbed by an alternator fan running at maximum speed? The fans are typically externally mounted with the V belt drive. I would like to know this to make up a power budget.

Re: Power required by standard alternator fan?
You mean the tiny vent fan that's on most alternator shafts?
I suspect it's negligible. Unlike a radiator fan, it is too small to move an appreciable amount of air, but would likely consume more hp as the revs rise. This is just a wild guess, but for the sake of your budget, you could allow approx. 1/10 hp, perhaps, at max rpm. |
