Hi! to all and a paint question...
Hi,
I'm new here. Been modelling for over 30 years. Mostly aircraft and military. I've decided to get serious about the car and motorcycle kits I have stashed in the shed, so here I am, trying to learn! Which brings me to my first question: What automotive paint should I use for the body of Tamiya's Team Holzer Opel Astra V8 Coupé? Tamiya says X-31, but I wouldn't know how to convert that to a real car paint. Anyone an idea? Thanks in advance! Cheers, Erik from the Netherlands. |

Welcome along to AF....I hope you enjoy your stay here
The body is painted with TS31 which is a spray can from Tamiya(bright orange)

Eric, does the kit hve any decals with the body colour? If so, then you can go to the shop with the decal(s) and let them match the colour to that on the decal.

Hey, Thanks!
That's a good one, Ales! There are in fact two small decals with the "right" colour. I'll see what I can get at the specialised paint shop.
Cheers, Erik. |

Okay, If I go forward with TS-31....
...how can I airbrush it? The idea of spraying the can into a little container and using that to fill my airbrush seems nice, but I'm afraid it'll create a whole mess with more paint on the walls than in the container....
Secondly, what lacquer can I use on top of TS-31 to seal in the decals? Tamiya's own TS-... Clear eats the decals, I've noticed. Thanks in advance again! Erik. |

When using Tamiya Clear spray, you have to put it on in thin coats. That way it won't harm the decals.

If you want to use automotive paint fir this car, see if the team has a website. Send them an E-mail, be sure to state what car and year you need the information on. I have done this several times for Nascar teams here in the US. Once you know the name of the paint they used. Go to the paint store and ask for the color by name.

Great idea!!!!!
...About looking for the team site! I never thought of it. To tell you the truth, I'm a bit jealous of the idea....
I'll try the Tamiya clear on a scrap decal..... Not that I don't trust your experience, but it isn't funny if you see the decal start to cracquelée as if it were an old Dutch master..... I experienced that on the decals of my 1/12 Brabham BT-45, or was it the -44.....? Thanks again & cheers, Erik. |

HI and welcome to AF, please place some pics of the models to show us how good your models are.
En waar in Amersfoort woon je...? Bij de grote kerk in Hoogland zit namelijk een goede verfzaak die elke kleur kan mengen die je maar wilt.. dus misschien een goed idee. Tis een goede zaak en dicht bij mijn huis.. |

As most in here know i'm not a fan of clear coats over race cars...it gives them a false look.
All mine i have done i just wax the decal when finished which IMO looks a lot better. I've heard and had horry stories about clear coats melting decals which happened on my BTCC Volvo

Heeeeee!!! Geinig!!!!!
Ik woon in Liendert, vlakbij het zwembad. Mijn Peusje gaat altijd naar Kreyne, maar de Peugeot-poot zit tegenwoordig op Calveen. Hoe heet de zaak en aan welke straat zit-ie? Bedankt alvast!
Sorry for the bit in Dutch, folks! It so happens that "tha Wishmastah" lives about 3 miles from my place ànd he could point me to a good paint-store! As for my modelS, I'm ashamed to confess that I have started a good many car kits, but I've only finished Tamiya's 1/12 Brabham BT-44 from 1975.... Had some motorcycle models done, but most of them met the same fate as most of their their full-size counterparts....:o Groetjes, Erik. |

Thanks, Warren,
I like to seal my decals from my aircraft-modelling experience. It prevents them from falling off the model after a couple of years.... But I can hardly use Gunze-Sangyo Flat Clear as I would do on an olive drab P-51 Mustang, can I?
I guess I'll have to try what works ánd what looks good. Thanks for the input! Cheers, Erik. |
