96 Sable Gs- Same speed takes more RPM's Occasionally.

Hi guys,

I noticed that went I'm out on the highway, Sometimes my Sable runs nicely at about 2500 rpm's and 65-70 mph's.

But at other times the engine seems to be running noisier and it's at 3500 rpm's and the same 65-70 mph.

A couple times I have actually felt the car kind of lurch forward and the rpm's immediately went up to the 3500 level.

I'm wondering what the problem is. Fuel injector? Transmission?

I was thinking that my transmission was stuck at too low of a gear but I'm not even sure how many gears this car has. 3? 4?

Any help is appreciated.

Re: 96 Sable Gs- Same speed takes more RPM's Occasionally.

OK, I think I found my problem.

I took it to the Auto Parts store and had them read the computer code from my Service Engine Soon light.

Turns out there is a thing called a "Vehicle Speed Sensor" that is supposedly malfunctioning.

Quite a few things on the car depend on this sensor such as the speedometer, the rpm gauge, the transmission, the power steering.

When this thing goes bad it screws up your whole car. My car isn't shifting properly cause the computer is getting bad information from this Vehicle Speed Sensor.

It's about a $25 dollar part.

I'm gonna see if I can replace it myself but I heard it's a hard part to get it.

Anybody know where this part is on a 96 Mercury Sable GS?
