mileage help 1991 tercel 1.5 auto fuel injected

I have just purchased a 1991 tercel 1.5 automatic fuel injected.
What emissions and other parts can I remove to improve my gas
mileage. Its a 4dr would removing interior parts help that much.
What engines tips can someone give me any and all. I love this
little car and I only have 8800 miles on it. Can I get 40+ on the
highway or more? I would like to keep the costs down on this vehicle
at all costs. I noticed when I drove it home last night it sounds like
it needs another gear in the transmission.


What books/online sites would you recommend to help me in my
quest for mileagebliss...........
