Service engine soon light??

I tripped the service engine soon light while working on the starter by cranking with the distributer unplugged. Can I reset it myself? It is a 99 Sentra with the 1.6 liter. I have tried unhooking the battery with no luck and I have driven it 2 days and it is still on.

Re: Service engine soon light??

If unhooking the battery did not help you will need to get an OBD-II tool that plugs into the data port under the steering wheel and clear it that way. Hope you know someone that has one they are expensive.

Good luck.

Well I wasn't trying to jab but it is frustrating when no one even bothers to answer with a guess or a "I don't know". As a matter of fact the Honda is a lot faster but it is for my son and the Nissan is a work car for my wife. The only problem with the Honda Forum is there are a lot of real im-mature people there that love to stir up trouble. I firmly believe in giving all the info I can to anyone who asks or at least aknowledge them by saying I don't know or suggesting a fix. The Nissan has caused us no problems at all in the past until the starter went out and I knew why the service engine light came on but not how to reset it. On the Honda I simply remove a fuse and replace it to reset the light. I am by no means a fan of Nissan or Hondas so don't get me wrong. I am an American Iron fan myself. I drive a Dodge Cummins diesel truck so I was not knocking the Nissans at all.

Re: Service engine soon light??

Hi Rlyons,

Glad that worked for you and that Autozone had one you could use. A neighbor of mine that has one of those boxes cleared the code in my car when I lost my O2 sensor.

Just an FYI, all cars 1996 and newer (to a point) sold in the US all use the OBD-II system so they can all be cleared with the same box.

I know what you mean by immature people, I'm having trouble with a Nissan myself, one of the replies that I received said to sell the car and referred me to a Subaru website.

Re: Service engine soon light??

well to be fair this section of AF is not the most highly populated area, plus those of us that are here tend to specialize in newer models, autozone has scan tools that they usually short loan or use one your car for free or at a discount, they are getting in trouble sometimes because of dealerships complaining that the 200 dollar diagnostics they do can be done for free or 10 bucks at autozone, so it depends if they will help you or not. as for a reset procedure, if the ecu being unplugged doesnt work then you need a scanner, on the newer sentras there is an ecu reset procedure as well as a throttle body reset procedure, on your older model who knows, and torch, hows that project coming anyways, solved your idling and power issues yet?

Re: Service engine soon light??

Hi,

Project is stalled, waiting on the owner to come up with some money to buy parts with.
