I have noticed lately that my transmission seems to be shifting late. It has all the shifts but will only go into high at 45-48 MPH.At 70MPH the tach is reading 2500-2700 RPM Is this normal or am I looking at a problem?? Is there a cable adjustment for the down shift or is it all internal. Thanks in advance I have a 1997 V6 Auto 4X4 with 128k Trans serviced (flush and screen) at 80K.

Re: 1997 Explorer Sport shifting
Before I changed any parts I would go to Auto-rx.com and read the auto transmission section. This stuff cleaned my transmission parts......it started shifting properly. 4.0L 170,000 miles. I do not have a 4WD.

Re: 1997 Explorer Sport shifting
You have 128k miles and you serviced at 80k? When did you service before that? I buy quality ATF and replace ever 12,000-15,000 miles. I put a drain plug in my pan so I wouldn't have to loosen 18 bolts and replace the gasket every time.
I would not add fluid modifiers to your AT. |

Re: 1997 Explorer Sport shifting
Do you have the SOHC 4.0 V6 or the 4.0 OHV engine?
4 speed or 5 speed automatic transmission? When you had it serviced was the correct factory specificed trans fluid put in it? Printed on top of dipstick. My Ex 4.0 SOHC, 5 speed auto trans. 3.73 gears and 2wd. Shifts into 5th gear OD at 48 - 50 mph. Based on what you say, I don't see any problems. Dean Last edited by Dr98; 02-24-2007 at 02:22 PM. |
