I think I am abought to buy a 95 Park Ave for a "work vehicle" and wouldlike some advice on what might be wrong with the AC. Also would like a guess on the potential costs to repair the problem if any of you folks are familiar with this car.The AC blows cold air just fine, but the clutch on the compressor is constantly cycling(disengaging/engaging). The fellow already had it charged with freon and it seemed like it solved the problem at first but the compressor started cyclingagain about every two seconds. Its not a deal breaker(I love this car), but I would like an idea of what the problemand the cost to repair might be.Thanks for any help.Bert

Re: AC clutch continously cycling on/off 95 Park Ave.?
Theres two control switches.. high pressure and low pressure switch for A/C pump..
The high pressure switch says the coolant is pumped up enough.. the low says it needs pumping.. if it gets too low it wont pump at all.. thinking no freon - no lubricant and try not to burn up the pump. .The air conditioner control head turns on the whole system. If the switches are good it sounds like its undercharged (again). When the pump turns on it pulls down the available gas and turns off the low side cut off... You could add some freon 1 Can while running and see if it improves and you want 50 % run time for about 10 seconds approx when its running better. Best finding the 50% in hot weather though. Hopefully they didnt put too much lube oil in it. It sounds like you have enough oil so dont add any. Since conditions changed while running.. "problem came back" you may have a leak. If you have a leak it will have to be found. The leak could be anywhere and a shop's sniffer tools help on that.. Sometimes oil showing up on a loose connection gives them away. Tweaking all possible connections you can reach from the pump to the firewall may help. Some of these are soft aluminum and need good open end wrenches on both sides of the joint to prevent damage of the nuts. Popular places of leaks are at the pump and at the firewall. The cost of freon has gone from $3 a pound can up to $10 in the last few years.. only from supply and demand business tactics. Your in good shape if theres not too much lubricant in it and the pump is good. If the system gets opened up theres a line filter inside a coupled connection in the system and the little filter can be checked for "Black Death" where the pump has failed and put metal filings through the whole system and a total loss of the system. Thats alot of info. Good Luck

That is a lot of info, good info.
Thanks for the reply. Very strange, this morning I started the car and left it running with the heater on wide open. When I returned ten minutes later the compressor clutch was cycling very rapidly. As soon as I turned the heater off it stopped cycling and I have not been able to get it to start acting up again so far. I have left it running with the AC wide open and the doors on the car open. The AC blows good cold air. Also with the heat on, no cycling of the compressor? Thanks for any help, info, tips or suggestions. Bert |
