Whines through 1st and 2nd gear...then stops

Easy enough right? from stop through 2nd gear i hear a whine coming from under the hood, sounds like tranny but im not sure. anything would help at this point.

Edit: 3.8L 130k miles, well taken care of. harder i mash the pedal the louder it gets. stops after 2nd gear

Does the whine only happen under acceleration,then stops when you let off the gas? My old Mits 3000GT used to do that (it was front wheel drive just like the Olds 88). I`d get a high-pitched whine under acceleration that would go away when I`d let off the accelerator. Mine was just a slight differential noise. Never gave me any trouble,just only made that annoying faint whining sound.

Yes, so if thats what it is, is there any way to make it go away? its extremely annoying...

Well,when my 3000GT was doing that(it had always mad that noise,actually),I had a friend of my dad`s look at it (he owns a foreign car clinic). He said it was just a normal differential whine and I had nothing to worry about. I kept that car for another couple of years before I finally traded it for the 300ZX I now have,and it never got any worse or gave me any problems. Has your car always made that whining sound?

i'd take it to a tranny shop get a free estament..have you had fluid and filter changed?
